It takes no time at all, and can happen your very first time. You'll find that your mind is clearer, and you sleep more refreshing. You'll also find that you have ten times more energy.

Meditation is something diffrent for everyone. You dont need to learn it, you already know it and you do it all the time subconciously. How many times did you feel yourself zone out or drift of and then comeback to your senses?
Manual meditation is easy as well, and it doesn't take long to get used to it and to like it.
Find a quiet place. Sit down indian style, try to get your back against something like a wall or a chair, so you can keep your spine straight. Slowly inhale through your nose and exhale through your mouth. Empty your mind. ( haha that sounds so cool, its like that matrix) Dont think about anything particular. This is your time. Nothing else matters. Let go of all your troubles. Imagine a pond. Its the most beautiful pond you ever saw. It's still. So still, you cant tell if its really water or a mirror. Imagine your looking into the pond and slowlly slowlly floating away. While your doing this, kinda notice how your body feels. Give focus to each organ one at a time. Go slowly from your toes to your head and then back to your toes. When I do this, I feel a warmth spread.
Doing this for about 5-10 mins after work or at the end of the day, or even when you just feeling you would like to relax, will make a huge diffrence in how you feel.
You'll notice you'll become much more come, more relaxed, and you will feel great.
When you say "thought free condition", do you mean in every day moment? or just when you do meditation?
I take martial arts and I do meditation. After 2 months I noticed a difference in myself. After 4 years now, I am able to concentrate and let go of all my thoughts just to have my mind be like an empty pool.
What kind of benefits can you expect?
You will feel relaxed. It first it will be for only short periods of time right after the meditation session, but after you will feel better and better for longer periods of time. At one point you'll notice that at this moment, you feel great, even better then at any other moment in your life. Your body will reawaken and will start to heal itself. With proper diet, you can cure yourself from any illness that bothers you. Your mind will become fresh and sharp. You'll start to notice things. Every day things that otherwise you would just go by. Leaves, trees, grass, a little picture that some kid drew on a sidewalk, even the way the chalk contrasts with the sidewalk. Little details will bring joy to you. You will see beauty like you never did before. Your sense will sharpen. You'll notice you see a bit more clearly. The colors are more vibrant. Your favorite song somehow sounds much better. Food will taste .... tastier. It's awesome.
Remember, as long as you want it, you will get it. Your in control. It might be hard to make yourself sit down and take the time to meditate, but after two or three sessions, you'll feel better. After that, it's easy because who doesnt want to feel great?
I hope this helps, feel free to send me an email any time if you want more info.

when you said meditation it literally means to meditate upon an object. then the it takes a few days to learn the techniques. benefits ofcourse will be that you are able to concenterate upon a given object or task. its no big deal. this suits the western mind and religions.
if you choose the way eastern realigions have seen it - they call it Dhyana in India, Chan in China & Zen in Japan. If this is what you are looking to learn - just forget about it. it may take a moment or takes millions of years to learn it. its a risky proposition. a christian, muslim or a jew will not be able to understand dhyana so easily. its not thier mistake, they have been brought up in that kind of religious circumstances. Dhyana is inclusive & exclusive of everything. IF you are out to learn dhyana, it cannot be learned. it can only be mastered. it takes time, it depends on you. benefits will be that you become a good human being. you are good not just to fellow being, but to this entire cosmos. everything in this cosomos vibrates through you. dhyana helps you feel those vibrations and relate yourself with everything, living & non-living.

It's not a "place" you go to, it's a "way" to feel better. Everything else we do is for a purpose, to get to a destination (have money, get good grades, have someone or something). Meditation is an end in itself because it takes you out of the "doing" for a purpose and helps to to be happy by "being".
As far as learning, you probably already meditate in one form or another. Go to the beach and listen to the waves....

Learning meditation is not that hard to do. Reading the Old Testament and seeing what it says about meditation and how it is done is not that time consuming. Getting into the practice of it in a busy schedule is the trick.

It depends how much time you can devote every day. You are aware that the whole idea is to get rid of the mind chatter.
When I started it was difficult to stay for 5 minutes even. But when I got into the trend I added a few minutes every day. After 2 years now I meditate for about 45 minutes every day. You can get rid of most of the thoughts after about 2 months. For me still vagrant thoughts come in - but I follow them and they get lost.
As to the benefites,
- your mind gets relaxed,
- your thinking will become clear,
- you will get rid of stress,
- you will have better concentration,
- If you have high blood pressure you will notice that it is coming under control.

You do not learn meditation.
Meditation is the power of disconnecting from a double state of the body : mind and senses.
1- To look at your inner mind and understand what is inside.
2- To look at the environing world, and feel what's there.
What is called meditation, is to take time off from both, and experience the vacuum.

Meditation is not something you learn, it is something you do.
Do not expect to "Get" anything from it, what comes comes. Only other bit of advice is find a good teacher and keep it simple.
I would recommend the Zen Buddhist approach, but admit that since that is my own approach I'm biased.

If you are reaching out to Jesus Christ, with a desire to meditate on His word, God will bless you. Your prayers to Him will be answered in His time, and His way. Choose a favorite Bible verse to sit and meditate on. Try not to let your mind wander to other topics. The more you practice focusing on Him, the easier it will get. You will feel peaceful and refreshed after spending time with someone who loves you completely.
