well sometimes u just have to respect the religion and feel lucky that u dont have to go through that! and i guess if ppol rly felt strongly against the ryts of their religion, they can do sumin about it!

And can i just say, as a Hindu I no dat arranged marriages r gettin less important we're gettin a lot more tolerant with unarranged marriages because of the society around us! Older Generations no dat dey cannot make the younger lot do sumthin dey dont agree wid! So the number of arranged marriages in Hinduism is decreasing! N if there r any, most families let the 2 ppol get 2 no each otha for a while! Thats how it works wid my relatives n family! N 2 of the recent marriages hav been gr8 and both the couples r very happy even tho they were both arranged!

Islam neither encourages love nor arranged marraige. Its a hybrid. A muslim man or woman has full right to choose their partner, but its advised that they should involve their parents in the decision, because parents are more experienced and can mediate in a productive way. If parents are opposing the relation because of something which has no relation to Islam whatsoever, then the man/woman can go ahead and get married. The best way however, is that, once a man/woman chooses a partner (there are rules for seeing your prospective partner), then the parents should mediate and get the marraige arranged. This is different from "arranged marraige" in the sense that the choice is not of parents but of the man/woman. Also this is different from love marraige in the sense that there is no pre-marital relationship.

Islam prohibits intermingling of genders but that doesn't mean that a man can't interact with a woman. They should be fearful of God, and if a woman wants to meet a man she should do so in the presence of a close relative so that there is no chance of fornication.

Well, actually I believe that many traditional mexican catholic families still practice this belief.

A good friend of mine grew up in such a family and her marriage was arranged - she was married off at 18 (two weeks before we had even graduated from high school).

I don't agree with it but I'm a White, American, non-practicing Catholic with virtually no use for the church anyway.

For the record, 15 years later, although she and the guy are still married, they are not happy. But I've heard of arranged marriages that end up very happy.

Who's to say?
