I'm writing a book about a woman who kills her husband when he was beating on her (she stabs him with a kitchen knife). I don't know what procedures the police would take in a situation like that. I want my book to be as accurate as possible. Keep in mind that she stabbed him in self-defense.

that is a huge question with an even bigger answer. Mostly it depends on the book, if you want it to be a book about the courtcase or about her life before, durring and surrounding the event. If you want ample detale about the processedings of the case, i recomend going to your local college book store (or somewhere online or what not) and buy a used Criminal Justice 101 text book. just get the cheapest one you can find, because that information doesnt really change too often. good luck

First they need to prove that her story of self defence is true. If there is a history of the husband beating her then that would make it easier on the Police.

The DA and her attorney would most likly cut a deal seeing as she killed him in self defense and she might even get aquitted if she was ever arrested for his murder rather than his death in self defence.

Hope this helps

Well if you want the book to be short......make it so the police have many documented calls to the house for domestic violence calls, and make it so a neighbor witnessed the whole thing from a window. If you want to make it longer with more meaning, have no witnesses, and make it the first time the police responded to the house for anything. She will have to go to trial to prove it was self defense, and it will be a statement about women who don't report domestic violence, and what it can lead to.
