I think any sensible person has no problem with fireworks, as long as they are set off only on 5th November, New Year's Eve, or certain religious festivals.
As to the mindless setting off for no reason at all times of the day and night, it rests solely with unscrupulous shopkeepers who want to make a profit with little regard for residents. Exceedingly high fines should be in place for selling to under-aged kids.
Regarding your pet, there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving it a can of weak beer (if it likes it.) It calms my highly strung lady dog (oh, come on Yahoo, "*****" means female dog!) down when it's too noisy.

must be an inside joke iv heard no fire works here in m.d. except the neighbor shooting his big guns for a couple hrs every now and then and some deer hunters any ways sounds like you have some drunk dope smoking under worked for sure teenagers and maybe a couple adult village drunks instigating the whole thing probably been around the neighbor hood for many years before most that live there now so they don't see where there doing any miss justice probably been doing that and worse for 20-30-yrs not much you can do with a bunch like that maybe the law will site them for underage drinking and drugs probably a bunch of pot smokers this will slow down the problem a little have you tried letting them know that its a problem for a lot of people in the area

Until such times as the authorities do something about it by actually STOPPING the sale AND availability of fireworks instead of just paying lip service to it, then we'll continue to be plagued by this problem - and don't forget, there's an excuse for a fireworks do nearly every weekend from now right through until the new year. Better get used to it folks, because we all know nothing's going to be done about it, don't we!

It is now against the law to let fireworks of after 10pm, I do hope your not complaining about families who have fireworks in their garden for the kids, as i love fireworks and where i live there are no displays. I also have pets and thy are usual out in the garden and watching I think people use their pets as an excuse. And i will finally add that my 92year old granny is the biggest kid of them all and would be very p****d off if she never got to see the fireworks.

The kids here started last week setting of fireworks and bangers - it is very annoying indeed. I think the real problem stands with the local shopkeepers who are clearly selling the fireworks to underage kids. I've seen the shopkeepers do it, makes me sick. They are interested in profit rather than safety or people's peace and quiet.

To those who post unhelpful comments here.. why bother? If you had someone ill at home or working shifts and trying to sleep, or a pet terrified by these unneccessary noises, you would be the first to post.

Fireworks are for 5 November, I don't believe they should be banned, they just should be sold to over 18's. If you are bothered by fireworks in your area its most likely you have a local shop selling to kids, so alert your local police and ask them to check it out.

Yes, it's ignorant and dangerous. In the states, the local police don't enforce or ticket the firworks violations on our Fourth of July, and this infuriates me.

Some people need to sleep, besides the dogs and cats freaking out. Not everyone is on holiday, so that thse little children can feel excited blowing off their cherry bombs and M-80s.

DOWN WITH FIREWORKS! Give the violators a huge fine, and/or lock them in jail overnight.

yes, we know its october, here in england we clebrate guy fawkes and the gunpowder plot..(a dastardly plot to blow up the houses of parliament.)

we live on a council estate, and its like downtown beirut... we had a german shepherd, who was terrified and got very agressive..so we'd pop half a vallium in his dinner...it chilled him out for about 4 hours... and we'd time it so he was stoned during the worst excesses of the kids...

and we did it every year for around a week... and the dog lived until he was 14... drastic maybe, but i think youll find there isnt much of a choice of options in this, ask your vet...

one year we didnt dope him.. he smashed a four foot hole in the fence, and went on the run for 3 weeks, we found him almost 20 miles away living rough in a farmers field... we got the phone call coz he was watchng the sheep, and the farmer was about to shoot him...(perfectly legally, and i wouldnt have blamed the farmer... a scared hungry shepherd is about as dangerous as a hand grenade without the pin... its not if, its when...

good luck.. and tell your oldies to close the curtains and turn the telly up a bit...

I understand them going off on bonfire night and maybe a few days before. But why weeks before. And then they have the right to complain that the dogs are making too much noise. Hello?

Liberals are doing this because only they are inconsiderate knots. They would tell you to get counseling for your dog, and if that doesn't work, then a lawyer..when in realty, you should walk up to whoever is shooting fireworks at 2 a.m. and smack him/her on his/her ***!

i agree this sort of thing should be illegal and only allowed on 5th november.
my dog was the same (she not with us any longer) but she used to dash behind the settee or dive into a cupboard. Also is extremely annoying just after you've settled your little ones down
