All I know is that (I think) it was a very old form of the calculator invented in the Tang or Song Dynasty of China.

Yup... Simple swap of balls and their "value".

In fact, whoever claims that computers are a 20th Century creation, is very wrong. The abacus was the first "calculator", or "computer" used by mankind to execute simple mathematical calculations.
