some people say its when the girl is pregnant and they get married quick and some other people say its when you're forced to get married and you have a shotgun held to you. :-/

The true definition of a shotgun wedding is a mixture of both the things you said. Back in earlier times in the midwest, if a boy got a girl pregnant, the father would go to the boys house and point a shotgun to the young mans face. This was used as a persuasive tool in order to keep the son from skirting his duties as a father.

A shot gun wedding is when the woman is pregnant and they have to get married in A hurry. But most words in English language come from some old traditions and things that may have happend in the past. So maybe so many years ago when marriages where aranged for people, They may have held A gun to there heads to get married. It's a last minute, quick decision wedding usually influenced by a situation that calls for marriage; ie: pregnancy. A long time ago, marriages used to be forced if a man slept with a woman; she would be considered ruined, and it would create a scandal for her family. So the family would force marriage. But in today's society, it's basically the joke that floats around when a man gets a woman pregnant outside of marriage, so then he marry's her.

It refers to a forced wedding because the girl is pregnant. The forced marriage is intended to restore honor to the pregnant woman/girl by making "an honest woman of her". Truly though....it's just a dumb, old saying...that doesn't hold much validity in todays society, since perceptions of unwed mothers has changed so much, and a father would likely never "FORCE" a man to marry his daughter, whether she was pregnant or not, since it is understood that the marriage would be doomed & would never last anyhow.
