Have a 6 yr old chocolate lab who now eats his food (1 cup) in about 20 seconds, barely chews, and often throws it back up. How can I prevent this?

tom l has the right answer. Putting a rock in the bowl (large one that he couldn't possibly swallow) will slow him down because he has to eat around it. It works!

In the wild, some dogs do this so they can get a meal before some other predator or pack member gets to them. They ingest food as fast as they can, then they go to a quiet place, vomit and eat it where they won't be disturbed. You'll have to teach your dog to eat slower. The rock in the bowl is a good method, or you can break up the feeding into smaller portions.

Make sure that there isn't a medical reason why your dog eats this way. Years ago we had a dog that had a similar problem. Unfortunately she had cancer that spread to her throat and she ate like this because it was the only way she could eat. We had no choice but to break up her feedings into small portions (it helped). She died a few months later from the cancer.

raise her bowl up so she has to work at it to eat. also you can
buy bigger kibble, so she has to chew rather than swallow her food whole. dogs that come from large litters have a tendency
to eat fast because as small puppies the strongest survives
by getting to the food first so the rest can't have any.
if you feed her in a crate get a bowl that attaches to the side and elevate it so she has to stand on her tippy toes to eat, this teaches her to take small bites and to chew. if you don't feed her in a crate get an elevated bowl from the pet store, there's several
different styles to choose from. my choc. lab did the same thing, i feed him in his crate and still keep his bowl elevated, it also aids in better digestion, he'll be 4 years old next month.

Place a small bowl upside down in the middle of his food dish (or a big rock). This is an announce (can't really call it a problem) that we deal with all the time.

Feed him less until he stops throwing it back up. Work back up to the normal amount ( given in a single serving ) as he adjusts his habits.

I know this will sound silly, but try hand feeding him for a few days. Little bit at a time til it is gone. If all else fails, call your vet and see what he says.

You can call the vet to cull your lousy dog instead of letting it suffer through all the bulimia it has to go through every meal
