ok i will break it down for you in all catagories lol.
assult rifle-AK-47 you just cant stop them
semi auto rifle centerfire-remington model 7400 synthetic i have been using this one since 2000 and it hasn't let me down yet,and the acurracy is great.
lever action- winchester 30-30,used this when i first started hunting, i chose it because of the history and reliability.
bolt action- mauser-arguebly the most accurate to this day
pump action- never shot one so no clue on that
shotgun- beretta in all classes- italian, been around forever, need i say more
i used my dads savage 20 gauge pump when rabbit, squirrel,or turkey hunting. it has always served us well but still don't have the overall reliability and so on of beretta
rim fire - limited experiance but im really comfortable with Dad's winchester semi auto, my step grandfater has a lever action henry, and a pump i don't know the make of. all .22 and dads semi is a mag.
hanguns
revolver single action the colt peacemaker-need i say more.
revolver double action-smith and wesson .38 special served our police from the 20's through the 80's
semi auto- this one i have a hard time choosing there are so many really nice ones but i lean more to the Glock in any caliber. anytime you can stick a gun in the oven, water, freeze it or bury it in sand and it still fires flawlessly it has my vote(yes someone done that in a gun mag i read)
Black powder
handguns colt.44 navy - i have a reproduction of one it is really fun to shoot and you can't help but feel a bit nostalgic when doing so.
rifle- hawken . 50 - concedered top of the line in the 1800's and was the prized possesion of the frontiersmen, and trappers.

That is a very broad question. Rifle? Shotgun? Handgun? Part II, which is my favorite? Again, a broad question because I have many favorites.
For combat in recent history the best rifle would be the M-14 with the Garand a very close second. (M-14 shoots the nearly as powerful 7.62x51 NATO cartridge & has the advantage of a 20 round box magazine.) My favorite? The FAL or the Bushmaster AR-10 (in 7.62x51 NATO).
Hunting rifle? The Remington 700 in the modern caliber of your choice. My favorite? The .25-06 Remington (in Remington 700), albeit, too small for anything larger than Mule Deer. Next favorite: Ruger #1 Safari Grade in .458 Winchester Magnum (suitable for any big game in North America). For small game, rabbit, squirrel, etc. the Browning .22 caliber automatic take-down model.
Handgun? The Glock pistol. My favorite? The Glock Model 20 in .10mm. For wheelgun lovers, the Colt Python .357 Magnum. My favorite wheelgun? Colt Python royal blue w/6" barrel.
Shotgun? The Remington 870. My favorite? The same in 12 gauge.
Interesting question. Makes one think.

Tough call to make and question that will get alot of crap for answers "cuz thats what dad always shot" kinda thinking.
I would tend to lean toward the Browning BAR in a rifle, time & terrain proven to be a very reliable weapon in any condition.
(by the way, never owned and neither did dad)
Without a doubt the Colt 1911 IS the most reliable handgun ever made. Their 1991A1 made a few improvements, but still the 1911 is a stand alone classic. Now if you wanna shoot distance/accuracy its not typically your best choice. But for all purpose/self defense you CAN NOT beat the 1911

The post b4 mine really brought up a good point that I must second.
"2) The best rifle has to be the M1903 Springfield rifle in .30-'06. It ushered the US into not only the smokeless era, but as a wold power. If a person could only have 1 rifle, and he/she were limited to the '03, there is nothing they could encounter that the rifle would be deficient on"
Well done still a tough choice for me between it and the BAR tho

Bound's hubby here:
You are actually asking two different questions ... best gun of all time, and favorite gun.
My answer for best gun of all time isn't one, but five ...
From the Blackpowder Era:
1) The best handgun has to be the Colt 1850 Navy ... it ushered in the modern era of handgun development.
2) The best rifle has to be the Browning/Winchester 1885 High Wall, the most extraordinary hunting and target rifle ever devised!
From the Smokeless powder Era:
1) The best handgun has to be the M1911/M1911A1 Colt .45 ACP, the best (and most intimidating) handgun for realistic personal defense.
2) The best rifle has to be the M1903 Springfield rifle in .30-'06. It ushered the US into not only the smokeless era, but as a wold power. If a person could only have 1 rifle, and he/she were limited to the '03, there is nothing they could encounter that the rifle would be deficient on.
3) The best shotgun has to be the Winchester Model 12, a truly American design that ushered in the hammerless repeating shotgun era, and a very stylish design that is unbeatable.
Now, my favorite gun ... probably the M1A/M14 rifle ... meets all my requirements for accuracy and can be used (where legal) for hunting, target, and defense. The best all in one rifle I could ask for!

Well, I have several favorites, The Russian VEPR in 7.62x39 is by far the most accurate AK styled weapon I've ever fired.
Next is the Bushmaster M4A3, accurate, reliable and loads of fun.
Next is the Swiss K31 , this is the most accurate long range military surplus rifle I've ever fired, plus it has the advantage of being a straight pull bolt. If this rifle were produced today, the machining alone would be 1500 dollars, surplus K31's can be had for less than 200 dollars.
Next would be the Finnish Mosin Nagant rifles, accurised and reissued to Finnish troops during WW2.

Thompson Center Contender or Encore. Switch calibers, barrel lengths, and from single shot pistol to rifle in a few minutes. Definitely a versatile gun.
My personal favorite for a long gun is the Remington 870 Express in 12 ga.

You really opened a can of worms with this one......
Without cheerleading for my personal likes or dislikes and answering objectively????
Answer: The Mauser 98. It is the basis of "nearly" all bolt action rifles made. It has served in 2 World Wars & countless hunting fields. It has been the custom action of choice. It has served in some variation world wide for most of the 20th century. 2nd choice?? The AK-47, The most sucessfull gun design of all time.

The best firearm in my oppinion for home defense is any semi-automatic pistol chambered in .40,.45, and 9mm. My favorite weapon that is potentially good for close range urban war-fare is a Spas 12 gauge Sawn off.

Id have to say the Springfield Arsenal M1911. High quality .45. Used by the military for almost 80 years till they went with the weak 9mm.
