I have already uninstalled and re-installed YM w/voice but upgraded to a newer version to fix another issue I was having. Now when someone comes online I only get a sound like a poof of air rather than a doorbell or a knock etc. The sound worked in the previous version.

Yahoo! changed the sounds from v800701 (released 10 August 06) onwards to "new" ones (they are actually from the Mac version) so our familiar sounds are no more and yes, they are incredibly difficult to hear :(

the fastest and easiest option is to download Yahoo Sound Alerts Reset here:
http://www.wackyb.co.nz/option,com_remository/Itemid,3894/func,fileinfo/id,12/
which once run, means you can select from old or new sounds for each individual user and event
you can happily download future versions of yahoo messenger without having the replace the .wav files again :)

alternately, you can download the .wav files included in previous versions from..
http://www.wackyb.co.nz/option,com_remository/Itemid,3894/func,fileinfo/id,1/
instructions included with the .zip file but basically just unzip the file, copy and paste all the .wav files included or just the ones you want to revert back to e.g the buzz one, and drop them into
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Media
and overwrite when prompted :)
the major disadvantage of this method is that future upgrades of Yahoo! Messenger will overwrite the .wav files again so they will need to be replaced

or you can use any .wav file of your choice,
Messenger > Preferences > Alerts & Sounds
then start replacing the sounds for the specific events e.g
scroll down to a When I receive an Instant Message (and the other alert options available) and click on it
then under Alert Me By
click on Browse
and navigate your way to the sound file you wish to use
click Open, click Apply, click OK

Hi,

If you want to know when a specific friend has messaged you when you are away from your computer, you can assign a different sound for them to be played when they come online or send you a message. The plugin is still in beta (pending approval) but you can test it here:

http://www.wackyb.net/YahooPlugins/status_voice_alert/

Lets you fully customize sounds for each friend allowing different sounds for each as well as all status changes. A log is kept of all your friends status changes so you wont miss a thing!

** Also included speech output, if you install the neccessary files (details on website and help tab) you can have your friends status changes read aloud to you! **

If you just want your old sounds back, Simple solution..

Download Sound Alert Toggle here:

http://www.wackyb.co.nz/option,com_remository/Itemid,3894/func,fileinfo/id,12/

run it.. done :)

No Zip files to unpack.. no files to locate or preferences to change

Easy.. and you wont need to change them again every time you update your messenger version. You can toggle for all your ID's at once or even individual sounds from old/new
(just as simple to toggle them back to the new ones if you want a change ;)

Hope this helps :)
