OK, God holds us accountable for every sin. but instead of us paying for the sins ourself, Jesus paid for them by being crucified. so we are still held accountable, however as long as we believe and live by His guidlines and ask forgiveness, Jesus' sacrifice covers the sins. So dying on the cross was not itself forgiving us, us was payment for our sins so we don't have to pay (go to hell) ourselves

God says that sin against Him is so serious a matter that the punishment is death. Yet He does not want that for us. None the less, He has established His law and No one, including Him can break it. No sacrifice that man has ever made was good enough to pay this price. None of us are capable of living a life without sin. Only God was able to pay this price. Jesus did not merely forgive sins in His death on the cross. He bore our sins. He paid the price, once and for all time with the shedding of His blood. His blood was not tainted by the sin nature that has been passed down to us from Adam and Eve. (Though they were created in a perfect condition, they took on a sin nature when they choose disobedience. All of their descendents receive this inheritance. Like begats like.) Modern medicine has now learned, after all these centuries that the blood of a child is determined by the father. That is the importance of the virgin birth. Jesus had a human mother but He was conceived by the Holy Spirit, (the third person of the God-head,) and thus did not inherit the sin nature that would have been passed on to Him by an Earthly father. If He had sinned even once during His life on Earth, He would not have been worthy to be the sacrifice that paid for our sins. His sacrifice is what makes a way for us to return to the presence of God. We need only accept and acknowledge His sacrifice and His Lordship in our lives to receive the gift of eternal life with Him.

And here is the BEST part! If Adam and Eve and never committed any sin and if None of their descendents had ever sinned and YOU were the only person in all of history to ever sin against God, He would have still do it all just for you alone. That is how much He wants us to be in relationship with Him.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.--Romans 6:23 (New American Standard Bible)

People are born in sin that they inherited at birth by no fault of their own, sin is imperfection that gives the person a short life full of troubles and eventually DEATH.

Because man is born in imperfect sin, he can commit even more terrible sin by bad behavior and bad thinking [ Gen.8:21 ]; and anything in the way of all the various kinds of sickness or bad health can result from being born imperfect.

Rom.6:7 When a person dies they are freed from the sin they were borned into if they can be raised from the dust Psm.104:29,30 [ Job 34:14,15; Gen.3:19; John 5:26-29;
Acts 24:15; Dan.12:2; Isa.26:19 ]; COMING FROM THE DUST AS A RESURRECTED SOUL INTO THE 1000 YEAR JUDGEMENT DAY NOT BORN IN SIN BUT RESURRECTED.

God could have destroyed it all and none of the seed [ or offsprings ], of Adam would have had any life.
All was perfect to Eden. From Eden all is LOST until it is SAVED by Jesus and his ELECT PRIEST Rev.20:1-6, they are with him to resurrect 12,13 for the judgement day
Rev.3:12 to come down out of heaven from God Heb.12:22-24 the spirits of just men made perfect [ John 6:39,40,44; 1Thes.4:15-17 ]; are with Jesus at his coming to make the earth new [ 2Pet.3:13; Isa.65:17; 66:1,22; Rev.21;1-5 ]; Rev.20:12,13 resurrects:
Heb.9:27 It is appointed unto man once to die and after that, the judgement day, 1Cor.15:22-28,51-53 As in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Rom.14:9-12; 2Cor.5:10; Philip.2:5,9-12; The 6, 000 year old LOST WORLD in Eden will be SAVED in the 1000 year reign of OUR LORD AND SAVIOR CHRIST JESUS.

SO JESUS WAS CRUCIFIED

Luke 23:34 Father forgive them for they know not what they do [ these that pierced Jesus knew not what they did }????
Rev.1:7; Jesus comes with the clouds and every eye shall see him, even they that pierced him, and all shall wail because of him, Amen ????

Heb.2:9,14,16 Jesus has the right to destroy Satan.
1Cor.15:22-28,51-53 he has the right to have his heavenly body, he has the right to save and judge the world Acts 17:31 and to destroy death and make all as perfect as it was before Eden 2Pet.3:13; Rev.21:1-5 for his God and Father to be all in all.
Heb.9:14-16 Jesus gave his word on it, he sealed it with his life and we have the New Testament added to the Old Testament to show how all is LOST in Eden to Be SAVED by the first thing God ever created. We know him as Christ Jesus our SAVIOR.

What Jesus did was repurchase. redeem, ransom , pay a price in exchange for what Adam lost. a perfect human life , in exchange for the perfect human life that Adam lost. No ordinary human could have fulfilled this role as all have been born after adam's fall into sin and death, that is why we are all born dying.
If Adam had born children when he was perfect then these children would have been perfect but he never did.
God's justice allowed for the situation in eden to progress. he could have wiped them out and started all over again, however , that would have failed to settle the bigger issues of God's sovereignty and his right to rule. all the angels in heaven were witness to these events too remember and their stand on the issue of sovereignty has been brought into question.
Only by means of that sacrifice is the prospect of being saved from sin possible. without it there would be no hope at all. That is why Jesus is called the Lamb of god that takes away the sin of the world. through giving his life and remaing faithful in spite of the immense pressure and suffering and injustice that he had to bear.
In fact, the high priest Caiaphas was well aware along with others that he would have to die and they plotted how to accomplish this. By learning about the redeeming power of Jesus sacrifice and exercising faith in god and his son and his word then we can have a clean conscience and hope for our sin to be wiped out in the future. for we are all slaves to sin, and the wages sin pays is death . Who of us can rescue ourselves from our inevitable mortality ?

He didn't, this is the way it works, according to what I believe. In the garden he took upon him all sins, as being the person who could. Then made a sacrifice to pay for all the sins he took by sacrificing himself. Forgiveness is only achieved asking for repentance. This is done by accepting and believing in what Christ did, being sorry what was done, and trying to repair any damage (if possible). Forgiveness isn't automatic, but it is available since no one who has sinned can come near God.

God was so disappointed in man and the fact that we turned our back of Him. We were all destined to spend eternity in hell apart from God

Jesus agreed to come and die for our sin. To pay the price for us.

I believe, and there is some disagreement on this, that Jesus spent those three days in hell for us. He then defeated the devil and death and came back to earth for a while to start His church and then ascended to Heaven where He awaits the time that He'll return to earth.

BTW..it's not only Christians that believe Christ was crucified. Even the nonbelievers agree that He was crucified. They just don't believe He was who He says He was.

All that comes to mind is that just before he died, as he was in agony he yells, "Forgive them Father, for they know not what they do!"

Beyond that, I'm not sure either.

I think it means that he died so that we could carry on his teachings. His death was significant in that the religion did not end with the crucifixion. The Gnostic's carried on and it morphed into modern Christianity -although I have a strong hunch that Jesus would NOT be pleased to find what those in power have done with the teachings.

Death by crucifixion was one of the most painful experiences imaginable, and Jesus' suffering on the cross was far more agonizing that anything most of us will ever have to endure.

But Jesus' physical suffering was only a sign of a much deeper kind of suffering He was enduring: the suffering of His spirit. When Jesus died, the face of His heavenly Father was hidden, and He was torn from the presence of God. He who had enjoyed unbroken fellowship with His Father in heaven from all eternity now faced Hell itself. This was His real agony—an agony far deeper than that which any other person has ever endured.

Why did He have to endure so much suffering? The reason is because all our sins were placed on Him, and when He suffered and died He was taking upon Himself the punishment we deserve. You and I only deserve judgment and hell—but He took our judgment and hell upon Himself. The Bible says, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us" (2 Corinthians 5:21). He took your place!

Why did He do this? He did it because of love! He loves us, and He wants us to spend eternity with Him in heaven. Sin is serious—so serious that it sent Jesus to the cross. But God's love is greater, and because of Jesus' death and resurrection we can be saved. Turn to Christ and accept Him into your life today.

In the Old Testament times, people would have to sacrifice unblemished animal to atone for their sins.
Christians believe that Jesus went to the cross to be the final sacrifice to atone for the sins of mankind.
As Christians, it is HIS sacrifice and acceptance of this that allows us to be forgiven. Jesus was the final unblemished lamb.

Does that help you understand?

When he (Jesus) died on the cross for our sins, he did this to forgive anyone who believes in him, that whomever believes shall have everlasting life.

John 3:16 -
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
