BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- A senior U.S. diplomat said the United States had shown ''arrogance'' and ''stupidity'' in Iraq but was now ready to talk with any group except Al-Qaida in Iraq to facilitate national reconciliation.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera television aired late Saturday, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the State Department offered an unusually candid assessment of America's war in Iraq.

''We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq,'' he said.

''We are open to dialogue because we all know that, at the end of the day, the solution to the hell and the killings in Iraq is linked to an effective Iraqi national reconciliation,'' he said, speaking in Arabic from Washington. ''The Iraqi government is convinced of this.''

Bush and bLiar learn the hard way. They don't have to withdraw now. They will effectively be forced to run. I read the article you just cited. Yeah , if things go like this for some more time , US will be willing to talk even to Al quaida .

yes, Senator Hillary Clinton has a plan on her web site to do just that. Pull back to a safe distance is the only way. I read this story. Why do you think the USA and Bush were opposed to a split in Iraq? If the UN troops were there now the UN would do the DMZ split. BTW, it is a bare face lie that we are fighting terrorist in Iraq. Only a real Idiot like Bush would think that. A terrorist will not stand and fight, they do the dirty work behind our backs, Just like in Nam.
Since Bush and Cheney are both draft dodgers they know nothing about war. Powel knows war so does McCain.

Yeah that will send a good message to the terrorist around the world. The Iraqi army needs to take over little by little like it is doing. We as a nation cannot run and hide just because things are going badly now. You need to keep focused on the big picture. Freedom for the middle east starts with Iraqi and Palestine. Just because it is going rough now , it could be worse if their governments were controlled by Iran

All those people who died that you are counting died so Iraq would be liberated. They would have died for nothing. Plus the massive slaughter of all the Iraq's on our side. Back in Kuwait we had some Sheiks on our side (they are powerful leaders in the middle east) and we fought Saddam and stopped him form invading Kuwait. Then do you know what we did. We left and all those sheiks we had on our side fighting for us got slaughtered. No wonder the Iraq's are scared to join our side we might just leave and let our allies die. I think we should finish this thing and show that we stand for good and aren't just a bunch of crybabys.

The biggest mistake in Iraq was when Bush sent Bremer in and threw away all the work the previous guy had done. If they would have left it alone, out troops would have been home 2 years ago.

Yes, I'm with you why don't we just surrender now. Better yet since the Islamo fascist won't be satisfied till we're all dead why don't we just end the whole mess by committing mass suicide.

We could mix up some cool aid down at the county court house and all take a drink.

Or we could kill them first.

Entrenched Diplomats are part of the problem.

It would be plain stupid to withdraw from Iraq pre-maturely . The U.S. needs to get back to the old hearts and minds campaign . When you've got them by the balls their hearts and minds will follow !!!
If we were to pull-out of Iraq , it would result in another dictator coming to power . Are people so stupid that they soon forget what happened in Southeast Asia !!!!!!

yes mistakes have been made, but winning is the only solution, and anything coming out of al-jazeera should be taken with a grain of salt.

You never win wars by pulling out troops just because the body count keeps on going up.
Look at the body count in the last wars, that was millions and millions, but we dug our heals in and won.
If we pulled out now, we would live to regret it in the near future.
