Help! I've been dyeing my hair for about 5 years. I started off using permanent red dye, then changed to henna about six months ago. I use the stuff in little packets - either red, or a mixture of red and black. I want to either go back to my natural colour (mousy brown), or go blonde. Is there anything I can do to lighten my hair, or do I have to (gulp) chop it all off and start again? I don't want to dissolve what little hair I have (it's really fine). Any help would be hugely appreciated :)

Don't bleach. Use natural instincts while you're growing it out. It's a temporary color which lasts about 6 weeks. It's about $6, and it will help nourish your hair instead of hurting it. Get the palest brown. As the color washes out of your hair, it will just look like you have some red highlights until you apply it again.

I totally sympathise. I have tried every hair colour going. I started of with Sun In (pure bleach in a spray) then went to the Henna packets from the Body Shop (which I hated!). I eventually wanted to go blonde but was advised against it because the henna would turn the bleach orange and I really didn't fancy the orange haired look. I also hated my mousy brown (I also started going grey at 18). I hate people who say oh just go back to your natural colour. It's easy for them to say but mousy hair is just "hair coloured". I used a semi permanent to go darker for a while until it grew out (Casting or Harmony). At least it was better than mousy. I then used the Les Blondisimmes range from L'Oreal Recital. I find the Ash one tones down any warm tones in your natural hair colour perfectly. I am now a blonde and have been using it for years. Occasionally people tell me to go back to my natural colour but I've learned that blondes DO have more fun and just to ignore them!

in case your henna is organic and consists of no metallic salts, then you actually can effectively dye over it with chemical dyes and bleach. metallic salts in compound henna can ruin your hair in case you blend them with ammonia/peroxide dyes. that's the salts that coat your hair and pose a chance, no longer the henna dye molecule, which chemically binds to the keratin on your hair. So examine the aspects record in case you obtain a mix. yet try the hair on your brush to be particular. And shop in concepts henna regularly would not bleach properly, and grant you with reddish blond rather of blond.

Not unless you'd like orange hair, or no hair.
Let it go, it will eventually lighten up on it's own. Do a shampoo
cap (Harsh shampoo leave it on 5 min.) each day. It will hurry the lightening.
Then, after a couple of weeks see what you have, without the chemicals, go from there!
You may even chose another color by that time.
good luck

Hi,
Do NOT bleach your hair.
Henna contains Aluminium salts that react with colours and bleach. Your hair will snap off if you bleach or dye it over the henna.
Ideally either grow or cut the henna out.
