Questions are simply that. Why take offence to what is supposed to be helping you? Didn't Jesus himself say "Keep testing to see whether you are still in the faith?" - 2 Coninthians 13:5 and to 'search the scriptures daily' - Acts 17:11?

Edit: {Toolman} I am not advocating ANY religion, and I agree, I should have phrased the question differently. The reason I said Catholic in general is because of the attitude I feel when I read other questions/answers to questions like this.

And answers like Katydid's are exactly WHY I asked this question. I'm not attacking anything. Its the fear of questions that makes me wonder why so many people can blindly accept whatever rhetoric they are told.

You could say the same of Baptists, or just about any other religion. Once people decide that they have "the Truth", they are usually not interested in looking any further. In my life, I feel I have looked TOO much and kept my mind TOO open, so I ended up being an agnostic. I am not really happy with that. Wish I had settled on some "Truth" and just stayed with it!

--Is Catholic--
Your average devout Catholic are some of your most well read people around so I would hardly consider them closed minded.
Additionally there is a big difference between being closed minded, which is a sort of fundamentalism and anti-rational, and having a position on a topic. The Catholic Church constantly rails against fundamentalism and attitudes that are opposed to rationality and philosophy.
If you read a book on Catholic devotion, such as "Introduction to the Devout Life", "True Devotion to Jesus" , etc. you will find that these books are highly philosophical in nature and are not simply self help books.
The Catholic Faith is not about being an intellectual robot, rather it calls for a robust rationality that is capable of thinking and acting in accord with what God has given us.
If you have more problems, message me and I will do my best to answer them.

Think the better question is why you would be forcing your broad opinion down our throats. When you get right down to it. You have NO physical proof that your specific faith is any more right than a catholics. You are sure quick to condemn a huge section of gods people. Think about that one for a while. Where is your heart and would that be a question that a truely religious and welcoming christian would even ask? Before you start slamming scripture down our throats, look into your heart and make sure your following the path the scripture leads. What I hear is an insecure masked hate!

Catholics rarely read the Bible for themselves. Catholicism historically commands the masses by spoon feeding them doctrine and tradition... Remember the church didn't even allow commoners to read the Bible. Martin Luther posted parts of the Bible and was excommunicated from the church for doing so.
They are conditioned to believe from a young age that they need a priest to reach God.
They place a great deal of importance on the virgin Mary and there is no place in the Bible that does that except that she was Jesus mother.
They are good people like most of us and though I don't agree with how they worship, I accept them as part of our freedom to choose and accept their diversity.
By the way Catholics when converted make devout Christians...

I am a devout Roman Catholic. I enjoy fellowship with people of all faith and goodwill. I am even a member of a Christian fellowship group at work that is inclusive of all beliefs and religions.
Don't assume that you are only helping Catholics, maybe Catholics are helping you in your personal relationship with Christ as well.
Many hate what they perceive of Roman Catholicism, not the Truth of Roman Catholicism. Investigate your Fear.
Praise be Jesus Christ, now and forever.

Catholics read the bible for 1,200 years before Protestants even existed. Why wouldn't they? It is a collection of Jewish and Catholic writings, compiled by Catholic bishops and approved by a Catholic Pope, for use in the Catholic Church. Those who have "borrowed" it from the Church God gave it to have no real claim to it, and no means of authoritatively interpreting it, as shown by the doctrinal chaos within Protestantism. God gave His Church, the one He personally founded, the fullness of truth. He gave His Church, and no other, a divine guarantee of truth, telling it "whatsoever you bind upon earth is bound in heaven"; "he who hears you hears me"; and "the Holy Spirit will guide you to all truth". With such divine assurance, why would Catholics be "open" to anything else? The Holy Catholic Faith is the standard against which all others are measured. Any other Christian body possesses truth only to the extent that they accept and profess what the Catholic Church binds upon earth. And no Christian body has any genuine truth that is not also found in Christ's own Holy Church.

First of all, they are not encouraged to read the bible, second- they are taught that only the catholic church can bring salvation, third, just as any cult, they are good at brainwashing by means of creating a guilty conscious, they don't explain that you don't need a church or religion or a preacher/priest to get saved and sins forgiven.
