I'm going through the same thing here with my 4yr old. Could be the abs, but may also be her digestive track. Kid's have a tendency to eat less balanced fare when sick often resulting in hard or loose stools. Right now, it's the cramps associated with the latter that seem to be causing her trouble. If you've been to the DR and he's put her on antibiotics,(not sure what the cause of her cough is) the medicine may also be killing the good bacteria in the GI tract causing-well, what we've been discussing here. Try feeding her yogurt to counter the affect. If you're really concerned something else may be wrong or she seems overly uncomfortable, get her to the Dr. On these things parents usually have a sixth sense-trust your gut-no pun intended.

My kids have had this and so have I when you cough a lot. I believe it is the diaphragm and ab muscles that cause all the tenderness. Give her some pain reliever; don't let the poor child suffer the discomfort.
Of course, as always, if symptoms persist, go to the Dr. to rule out anything serious.

my niece who is 10 just had this - my sis took her to the doc and she had a sinus infection - they checked for appendicitis, but have so far ruled it out - and told us to watch her - we think she was coughing too hard and pulled a muscle - but it's better to be safe then sorry - - good luck - - hope she feels better soon.

Do you even need me to tell you to see a doctor? Appendicitis springs to mind, but there are lots of other things it could be. Can you really trust your daughter's health to some know-it-alls on the internet?

Most probably a bruised abdominal muscle.
Check if she has any swelling near groin and if it gets bigger on coughing.
Sometimes hernia(congenital) can cause - though very rare.
