Other people have answered what neutrophils are, (bacterial fighting white cell) I just wanted to ad that if you have very low neuts (neutrophenia) then try to keep away from large groups of people and people that are ill (wear a face mask for added protection if you have to be in a crowd). You are prone to getting a serious infection, good personal hygiene is very important too like washing/bathing daily.

There are multiple types of white blood cells and each type provides a different immune function. Neutrophils mainly protect against bacterial function while lymphocytes (T and B lymphs) protect against viruses. When the neutrophil count is low you may be susceptible to bacterial infection and should take precautions to avoid exposure. A low WBC and fever indicate that you need to seek medical intervention immediately. Often antibiotics are needed. If you are undergoing chemotherapy for a cancer that does NOT involve the bone marrow, then you may be given a drug that helps increase the production and release of white blood cells to help protect against infection.

Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell. Their primary function is to react when there is an insult to the body; bacteria, virus. When they are too low then your ability to fend off threats to your body is diminished. Many chemotherapeutic agent do dramatically lower the number of neutrophils the body produces.

neutrophils are one kind of white blood cells (leukocytes). neutrophils are part of the immune system that protects our bodies from harmful pathogens.

neutrophils mainly kill bacteria and so they increase in no. when there's a bacterial infection (with few exceptions).

when neutrophils are too low, the body will be more susceptible to infections.

BTW one of the causes of low neutrophil count (neutropenia) is alcohol.

Neutrafils- the predominate white blood cell and the one that actively fights infection. They decrease in viral diseases, and drug or toxic reaction such chemo therapy causing neutropenia. This leaves patient more susceptibe to infection.
