No, not all shops are like that. However, they do stock MANY of the dresses in sizes that are smaller than the average American woman (14). And be advised,.. most dresses run 1 or more sizes SMALLER than you are used to. I was sick to my stomach when I went shopping a few weeks ago... I had to try dresses on that were 2 and 3 sizes bigger than I was used to. Sizes also depend on your build (if you're bigger on top, you may need a bigger size and get fitted down, etc).
Check out www.alfredangelo.com and www.maggiesotoro.com. They carry many dresses in plus sizes. You are not probably going to need a plus size dress, but the salons that carry their designs may be more likely to carry a wider range of sizes knowing the girls trying the dresses on could be a size 0 to a size 30.
Oh and www.davidsbridal.com has a good selection of dresses in many, many sizes. I went there just to get a feel for the style I liked and didn't like. I didn't care for the atmosphere at David's and HATED that you are in a MINIATURE dressing room and when you walk out of it to look in the mirror, you are literally in the middle of the store with lots of strangers around (men and women). If the dress didn't fit right, I was humiliated with my bra showing and my back exposed, etc. Just not the place for me!
But I digress... :)

If the shop you went to only has sizes 8-10, go to another shop. They are not catering to all women and obviously don't care about their customers. GOOD bridal shops have several sizes of dresses. The average American woman is a size 12, so you shouldn't have trouble finding a dress at a good shop.

No, and you want to avoid places that limit themselves so much. This is a big expense and if a shop can't accommodate the general population, then take your business elsewhere. We went to a shop for my daughters dress, and she got lucky they had a sample marked down in exactly the designer and dress she wanted and it was a size 16. She is also a 12/14 but wedding dresses are sized a bit differently than regular clothes. The bust had to be taken in a little, but usually dresses have to be adjusted in some way. Also shop online for styles and designers, then take those idea's to the shops in your area that carry them.

The reason David's Bridal does such a brisk business is because they sell dresses in EVERY size off the rack. You will not have any problem finding your size there.
I went to a few wedding gown boutiques and they "fit" you into the too small dresses and leave the back unzipped. It's not really a practical way to see how the dress looks. Then, they order the dress in your size, which is really a guessing game.

If you are a 12-14, you will probably need a 16-18 or bigger dress, they really cut the dresses small.
Worth asking the shop over the phone before you go on - a lot of the sizes are just silly!

Wedding dresses are typically 4 sizes smaller than normal dress size, im a size 6 and got a 10 dress. So if you are a 12 you will proably need a 16.

All the shops I went to last year had different sizes, just look through yellow pages to find a list of other shops near you. That's ridiculous that a shop would only have size 8-10's! It's not as though that is the average woman's size!

only 1 sample of each dress. The shops i tried mainly had bigger sizes to cater for all. I was shocked that my dress is actually a size 16, But it's made me feel so much better reading the answers to your Q. Good luck, you'll be fine!

Most shops have large sizes in stock. The trick is finding a larger dress in a style that you like. Even a 2 or a 4 will have to try on the bigger dress because they tailor it so much to fit exactly.
