No they don't. The fast starts at the first call to prayer, which is at sunrise, the fast ends at the fourth call to prayer, when the sunsets. They can't eat or drink during these hours. It's so they can reflect on the poor and what they experience, and also to clear their mind to focus on God. Traditionally they break their prayer with a date and juice, then with prayer, then they eat a huge feast, this lasts for one full moon cycle (muslims go by the lunar calander). Tomorrow or the day after Eid will start, this lasts for 3 days and its for celebrating the end of Ramadan. They visit family, exchange gifts, and can now eat all day - usually its sweets and snacking.
I am not Muslim, but i'm living in a Muslim country and its very enlightening learning about such a peachful religion (Islam means Peace), what you see in the news gives Muslims such a bad name, everyone I know who are Muslim are appaled by what they see of 'Muslims' in the news. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.

We Muslim Eat Sahoor this is like breakfast something very light. Then we pray and start our fast. Which is, Not eating, no drinking (even water), no sex, should be no cussing or bad talking, no fighting. What we do in this time is reflect on God and the Prophet by reading Quran, praying, making Dua (which is like praying). Then when the sun sets we break our fast, most do that with dates and milk or water. Then we pray the 4th out of 5 prays. Then we eat a dinner we call Iftar. Then we pray the last of the 5. And then for 29 to 30 days we pray tarawhee. This is like the five in manner but it is longer and more involved. The Quran is dived in to 30 parts and we try to read all of the Quran in those 30 days. After this is over then we go home sleep and start all over the next day However, there are sometime we stay up all night in worship; praying, reading Quran and Dua. This is done a lot on the last 10 days and one of those 10day can be the day when the Quran was revealed.
Then after the 30days we have a celebration called Eid. This is near but not like x mas. Kids get presents, money and we see our families a lot at this time. Also before the Eid we have to pay 10 for each person for a Zakat this is to help the poor people.
It really an cool thing to do not only that we as muslims have to do it. But it just makes you feel good. Healthy!

Yes. The idea is to feel how hard it is to starve like the poor.
Fasting is not only for Muslims, it has been a tradition for centuries before Islam.
Christians, Jews, Hindu and others also are required to fast.
Ramadan does not have to be 30 days but could be 29 days depends on the moon observation.
Health-wise, fasting is detoxifying the body off. It is the best way to loose way and give your body a rest to recover its digestive functions.

Of course not :).We start fasting starting from dawn to dusk. We eat after the sunset. Islam requires us to eat in moderate amounts and to never stuff ourselves up. That's not the point of this holy month.

The whole purpose of Ramadan is to:

-Feel and experience how the hungry, poor people are suffering, which encourages us to give out charity and help those in need.

-Helps and trains us to control ourselves and resist doing tempting sins (coz God does not accpet your fasting when you do sins in Ramadan). This is a wise idea and really beneficial as you'll get used to abstaining from doing sins, even after Ramadan, coz you have already trained yourself.

-Systemizes your body system and metabolism, while cleans away any intoxication

So basically we eat twice in Ramadan (and sometimes just one time: Before dawn (optional) and after dusk).

Hope that helped.

Blasted Muslim: A Muslim can have sex with their spouse after breaking the fast (Eftar), that is after the sunset; but not during the fast. Islam is not a difficult religion.

Definitely not, we eat and drink after sunset. But the meals are rather plain these days. We make up with a big feast at the end of the ramadan.

Also...there should be no sex and no smoking during the whole of the period. The ramadan clears your body and your spirit and you do feel healthy and full of energy after it....I'd recommend you to try it !

We close the fast at SEHRI (before sunrise) and open the fast at IFTARI (sunset).
Ramadan can sometimes last 29 days and is also healthy for the human body.

no, the period of fasting is between "before sun raise = 6:30am" till "sun down = 7 pm". no food, drink, sex between married couples during the time fasting, but after eating (after 7 pm) then it's ok.
