As far as I know your chemist is correct, unless you want to shampoo with something that - if used on a regular basis will definately ruin what I imagine is beautiful waist length hair .
By far the most common method of becoming infested with head lice is by allowing your hair to share items infested with head lice. Most of my patients are children (or parents of children) who have shared a comb, scarf, or towel, or perhaps worn a hat or slept on a pillowcase, of a friend who was infested with lice. In which case they then get treated.
So, be sure not to share such items with people, bring a towel to place across pillows if you sleep over and, in fact if you are really concerned do the same at hotels.
Hope this helps.

Head lice are tiny insects that live on the scalp. They can be spread by close contact with other people. These lice only live in hair and occasionally eyebrows and eyelashes.
Lotions and shampoos containing permethrin are usually effective. They are available over-the-counter. If these do not work, a doctor can give you a prescription for medicine that contain insecticides. Such medicine should be used exactly as directed.
Certain products make the eggs (nits) easier to remove. Some dishwashing detergents can help dissolve the "glue" that makes the nits stick to the hair shaft.
* You can remove the eggs with a nit comb. Before doing this, rub olive oil in the hair or run the metal comb through beeswax. This helps make them easier to remove.
* Metal combs with very fine teeth are stronger and more effective than plastic nit combs. These metal combs are easier to find in pet stores or on the Internet than in pharmacies.
* Removing eggs may prevent the lice from returning if the medication fails to kill every one of them.
* Treat children and adults with lice promptly and thoroughly.
* Wash all clothes and bed linens in hot water with detergent. This also helps prevent head lice from spreading to others during the short period when head lice can survive off the human body.

tea tree scented things are supposed to work. apparently head lice cant stand the smell so wont go to a head with it. i use a head lice prevention shampoo for my son which is tea tree and also a spray for when he goes to nursery. they have been many outbreaks of nits at the nursery but my son hasnt ever been infected.
i also check his hair daily with a comb and search for eggs. so if i did come across a crawler or an egg i could get rid of them asap.
so id highly reccomend the spray and shampoo. i got these in a store called home bargains in england. im sure they have similar stuff in other shops too

You can't prevent them, really, you just have to try to keep away from people, and keep clean. I'm laughing because I discovered that my 6 year old son had lice this morning!! We use mayonaisse. Massage loads of mayonaisse into the hair and scalp, cover with saran wrap, and a towel, for at least an hour, then shampoo liberally and brush well, and that should get rid of them, for a while, good luck!!

Tea tree shampoo and conditioner offends lice and nits but is not a guarantee against the lil' critters.
Some hair serums eg. biolage/matrix have one with silicone in them which I recommend to mothers with school age children. It slightly conditions and adds a component that makes it difficult for foreign pests to cling on to the hair shaft.

Actually they are correct, you can't rid them until you have them. There are certain things you can do to help prevent not getting them and these include, Not using someone else's comb or brush or putting on a hat that someone else has had on their head. Standard good hygiene practices will go a long way in preventing them

No need to use treatments to prevent them. Wash your hair every day and comb your hair with a very fine comb and conditioner. If you have headlice they will come combed out... if you wash your hair daily they will not have time to lay their eggs.
