Oh please.. some of these people are insane with their answers...
YES.. Amoxicillin is FINE!!! Thats what we give for Abcessed teeth. IF your not allgeric to the Penicillin family. But depends on the 'Mg' for how many you should be taking to clear the infection up properly. What is the Mg.. on that script you've got? Also, are the pills up to date? If their old.. they wont be up to par. They'll still help, BUT not the way it should...
Thing is though... Once you have that abcess taken care of... Go to your dentist and have that tooth treated. Otherwise, it will come back!

My dentist will always prescribe penicillin (or similar) to clear the abcess before removing a tooth.
In the UK you cannot get penicillin without prescription but I believe that Amoxicillin is available over the counter in the US (very bad practice, in my opinion, since it encourages people to be careless about finishing the course).
However, if you have it, take it for a week, even if the abcess seems relieved after 2 or 3 days. Then go to the dentist.

I can only assume that you're not allergic to the penicillin family if you have those tablets. The answer is Most likely: Yes they'll help, but you really shouldn't be taking them for an abscess without consulting a physician first. If push comes to shove, go to the emergency room. If it's bad enough, they'll give you a shot and then some meds or a presciption. While you're there, you can ask the e.r. Doctor about taking the amoxicillin.
Good Luck and Take Care.

Please, PLEASE do not begin taking an antibiotic without first consulting a doctor. Taking an inadequate dose or the incorrect antibiotic can lead to dangerous antibiotic resistance. This means that someday, when you really need this antibiotic to work, it may not because you took it for something that you were not supposed to or in the wrong dose. Amoxicillin is available via prescription only (in the US) for a reason. You should also be sure to take all medication as directed. In most cases, it is stated on the bottle to take antibiotics until the are ALL GONE. If this is the case, than one should not have antibiotics just lying around the house, correct. Good luck with your tooth and please go see a doctor.

Yes but you still need to see a dentist asap, as the infection will re-occur after you finish the AB.

antibotics, may help, and amoxi is generally used in dentistry providing ure not allergic, but it will not clear the infection up, it will get rid of the side effects ( ie swelling etc) for the time being... but i would not suggest taking them unless they were prescribed to you by ure doctor/dentist, antibotics are widely over used in this country, as a short term fix

ENN-O !
NO !
Localized sepsis (infection) requires localized intervention.
Antibiotic will do more harm than good.
ELSEWHERE, like.
What's the problem ? If dentist's pet tarantula died and he'll take no patients, there are others.
I mean dentists, not tarantulas.
Please...pray for courage and go get it done. This type endurance ain't the one what gets ya a cigar at the finish line, y'know.
