I travel a lot as a professional driver and the one thing that's always fascinated me is the amount of footwear I've seen lying at the side of the road, particularly on Motorways. Who leaves them there, what were the circumstances, why were they dropped, how long before you noticed they were missing?
I've always found it an extraordinary phenomonon!

It's lorry drivers that sit behind you doing 50mph in the middle lane as they are stuck behind you because they are not allowed in the outside lane they throw their left shoe at you to get your attention(as their left foot is not doing much,only to change gear)to try and get you to pull into the inside lane so they can pass instead of driving for miles in the centre lane behind you!

The same people who pull out a matress full of pubic hair and put it in every motorway service station urinal.
I think some people must take a pair of other shoes to change into halfway through the trip, put the original pair on theb roof while they change and forget to put the shoes back in the car before they drive off! This is the best explaination I can come up with.

Those shoes are from people the police have stopped and arrested for one thing or another. They are made to remove their shoes during a search for weapons or drugs. If the Cops decide to arrest them, then they are put into the police car without their shoes on. Most Cops don't want to bend over and put the shoes on a prisoner, so the shoes are just left beside the road. The men cleaning the road are the ones that pick them up.
P.S. It's not because the Cops are to lazy to bend over and put on the shoes of someone they arrest, it's because they don't want to get kicked in the face. Most don't care if you have shoes on your feet or not.

When you look at the shoes displayed outside a shoe shop, there are only the left ones! The owners of the shoe shops throw the others (right) out of the windows of their cars on the way to the shop. This is a cunning plan to stop people stealing pairs of shoes from the displays

Thats a very good question! Maybe if there is luggage on top of a car roof, the suitcase flew open and the shoes flew out!!

I always think that as well now Ive put it down to stag do's where they throw the poor sods clothes out the window one by one and then goes the shoes, The poor sod goes back down the hard sholder to get his belongings and can never find the other shoe!
