I am barely able to use my hands in the morning. No matter what time of day it is I can't write/type/drive/ etc for more than 2-3 minutes without the burning itchin and numbness starting up. I wake up in the middle of the night in pain. WHAT IS HAPPENING? Is there help out there? PS - I haven't had any acute problems that would cause this...like an accident etc

It is sure symptoms of arthritis. I have had so many patients tell me the same thing. They really hurt to and some of them get so bad they can't bend them or straighten them out. A quick way to help them out for a temporary solution is to run them under some warm water. That should help ease up the pain and all on them. Then i would ask your doctor what treatment is best for you based on any conditions you may have or any meds you are currently on now. Good luck

I don't know your age, so I'm only taking a shot at this based on general symptoms, but given the swelling exists, and is worse in the morning (after the joints have rested for a time) I would have to say that arthritis is a strong candidate. If aspirin or ibuprofen help with the pain, that would likewise mean that an inflammatory response is being (temporarily) corrected by these drugs. No matter what your age, check with your doctor; there are good medications and treatments available to help you deal with arthritis, and if it's something ELSE, you should know about it!

It can be reumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, inflammatory, multisystem, autoimmune disorder. It commonly affects the joints in a polyarticular manner. The symptoms are inflammation and soft-tissue swelling of many joints at the same time. The pain generally improves with use of the affected joints, and there is usually stiffness of all joints in the morning that lasts over 1 hour. Thus, the pain of rheumatoid arthritis is usually worse in the morning compared to the classic pain of osteoarthritis where the pain worsens over the day as the joints are used.
These are diagnostic caracteristics of rheumatoid arthritis:
Morning stiffness of >1 hour.
Arthritis and soft-tissue swelling of >3 of 14 joints/joint groups
Arthritis of hand joints
Symmetric arthritis
Subcutaneous nodules in specific places ...

You should consult a rheumatologist, the disorder can be diagnosed after blood test and immunological studies.

It's the waking in the middle of the night with pain that tipped me off - really sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome - usually caused from repetitive movements. Go to the doctor, and hopefully he or she will send you for an EMG test (hope that's the right acronyn) - it measures the nerves in the hands. Sometimes surgery is required.
I have it in both my hands - had surgery on the right one about five years ago, but won't have it on my left yet.
Alternatively, you could have arthritis.

the two answers you got first were my thoughts. I kow what you mean, its cause' we work our tails off and our joints swell. I am up this morning at 4am myself, sitting here, sore all over from work...couldn't sleep anymore...I hear ya', and sympathize with ya' for real.....(plus if your over 40, that doesn't help either, ugh.)
