My 1800's field stone fire place, leaks in when it rains. I can see the rain in the firebox. Note I do not use it as a fireplace now, I have a gas fire stove in the space. But can not seem to find where it is coming in, roof is new metal, but still leaks in rain water, please help me to find out how to find the leak.

You are not clear about where the water is showing up.

However, most leaks are where the chimney and the roof meet. These are usually caused by age deterioration of the seal or in your case with a new metal roof, it sounds like the contractor blew sealing it properly.

Call him back to fix/resolve the leaks.

Is there a rain cap over the top of chimney? Should be. The only way to find the leak is to go up and inspect the roof around the chimney. You say the roof is new metal. Was it done by a contractor? Call him back. Is there cracks in the stone chimney above the roof line?

Check to see if there are any bad mortar joints around any of the stones, also you may have to put a cap on the cimmney to keep the rain out, these are two possiblities if it is runnin into the fire box.
