Perhaps to replace it with better hopes and dreams. If the person's hopes and dreams are not based in reality, then the person will follow those hopes and dreams to no avail. Taking away the vacuous hopes and dreams might allow the person to develop some real ones that they might actually attain.
Reality is often harsh, and people frequenty find comfort in fantasy. They might even claim to be happy there. However, I find that reality gives a deeper level of contentment than any fantasy can provide.

Depends what those hopes and dreams are. I'm personally against Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Regime trying to take over the world.
Are the hopes and dreams REALISTIC? If so, then what they did was morally wrong. If they're realistic, and can be done,,,,why not do it?

Most people are seeking truth in reality... false hopes and false dreams will not lead them to truth, only truth satisfies and brings peace of mind. It's only moral to help people understand the truth and overcome infantile reliance on belief in sky gods or equally implausbile celestial teapots or invisible pink unicorns.

The last thing I would want to do is take away somebody elses hopes and dreams.
What good would they be to me?
I have enough shattered hopes and broken dreams of my own to repair.
No, I would rather let them deal with their own hopes and dreams, bright and shiny or broke down shabby.

Moral considerations aren't at the top of everyone's agenda. Self interest is the main reason why people hurt or fail to respect others.

People do it all the time, sometimes because of jealousy, sometimes through misunderstanding. The world is full of immorality, some people want what other people have, even though what they themselves have may be of more real value.

Because they are false hopes, and we only get one chance in life, and if we are wrong the cost is eternal.
