Really, in one way, the bird flu hasn’t begun yet.
Right now the virus is affecting birds in Asia, Europe, The Middle East, and Africa. Hundreds of millions of birds have either died or have been killed to try to stop the spread of the disease.
So far 261 people have been infected, and 151 of them died. That doesn’t sound like a lot of people, but this year the death rate is 67%. The death rate in Indonesia is just under 80%.
Up to this point most people who have been infected have gotten it from birds, but there have been clusters of human cases where family members passed the infection to other family members. One woman in Indonesia passed the infection to seven family members. Only one member of the family survived, and he was terribly ill for months.
The virus is constantly mutating, and the fear is that it will become easily transmittable from human to human.
We will not have a vaccine when the pandemic begins. We have to make vaccines and it’s not possible to make a vaccine until the virus mutates. It will take at least 6 to 9 months to make a vaccine, and for a very long time the vaccine that will be produced will probably be used for health care workers and people who fight fires and keep electricity on.
There are two anti-viral drugs that can be used – Tamiful and Relenza, but there are very low supplies, and there is no guarantee that they will continue to work through a pandemic.
There will probably be more than one wave of infection and each wave could last 6 to 8 weeks.
In 1918 more people died of pandemic flu than in all of WW1. Our modern medical facilities won’t improve our situation because there will be more patients than hospital beds.
We can stock a pantry with nonperishable food and water so that we can stay away from contagious people when this hits.

Bird flu hasn't disappeared. It is a seasonal thing - the birds haven't started migrating from the far east yet.

An interesting question.
The fact is that there is as much bird flu now as there was when we heard about it every time a newscaster spoke - none.
The whole thing was a hoax, started in America, for three reasons.
1 to keep the general public in a permanent state of terror, so that they are prepared to give uo their freedoms in exchange for an ill-perceived sense of security.
2 to make an enormous profit as a result of the sales of the totally ineffective Tamiflu, of which Rumsfeld used to be President, and is still a lrge shareholder.
3 to perpetuate the myth that vaccines actually do work, whereas the truth is that they are the major source of cancer and diabetes.
It's exactly the same as the SARS hoax.

Bird flu, like other strains of the flu virus changed and mutate or, lay dormant. The 1918 virus that plagued the U.S. went dormant to a point that no graves are to be opened, for fear of it starting again. It's not that simple but, it could happen. These viruses are very intelligent and yes, I speak of them like they can think. They changed rapidly to other strains and continue to plague us. If the bird flu ever crosses that line to mankind, not just at times like now through mysterious ways we don't quite understand, mankind can be in trouble. Viruses taken from Egyptian mummies from 4500 years ago are still virulent, that's a fact.

it seems to have died out like the media interest in it-though they managed to scare us for a while! The old saying that one swallow does not make a summer seems to have been the case. There is the propencity by self interested parties to over hype these things. Or maybe birds with flu couldn't get through immigration!

No. The media have got their knickers in a twist about Muslims and their veils. Don't worry....once they are sick of banging that one out they will probably start banging on about bird flu again. Or maybe .... something new. Gee Whizz I cant wait to see what the "media" come up with next to keep us reading and watching their inane broadcasts and publications to validate their sad little tawdry existence.........there!! I feel much better for that.

Yes - it HAS all gone strangely silent, hasn't it! I wonder if it was ever there in the first place and was it just a government ploy to cover something else up at the time? We may never know - or am I just an old cynic? (Not so much of the old please!)
