Lucid dreams are dreaming while knowing that you are dreaming.
You can be in control with no rules.
Nothing's impossible in the dreamworld. If you're aware that you're dreaming, you can control what happens. You want to explore space, morph into a gargoyle, walk through walls, or anything? Here you can. Sometimes you have to "convince" yourself that you're dreaming for things to work. For instance, I was in a lucid dream and tried to stretch one of my dream characters. It didn't work so I told myself "I know this is a dream" and then I stretched him up. Making things appear or changing the dream scene usually works best if you expect to see it when you open a door or go around a corner according to most people- I haven't succeeded in changing anything as of yet.
I really enjoy lucid dreaming, and I can't imagine anyone saying different if they're able to do it. I have about 2 a week. Sometimes less; rarely more.
I can't speak for astral projection as I've never done it (least to my knowledge lol).

Knowing you are dreaming in the dream state is the definition for a lucid dream. Why you would want this is another matter.
Many people will call lucid dreaming "Astral Projection", a spiritual state that will allow you to "journey" away from your body and see and experience things that may not be possible while awake. You may wish to project yourself to a specific time or place. I have done this, and oddly enough my independent observations were confirmed by the person I was viewing. (Long story, but freaky.) Some may categorize "Astral Projection" and "Remote Viewing" in the same general "lucid dream" state. There is more anecdotal evidence to support that this works.
Lucid dreaming is also good for examining your subconscious. In this state you can open your own mind to you, ask yourself questions and get responses, find out all sorts of things that are good for you and what you may want to rid from your life. It can be, with a lot of practice, a great personal self diagnostic tool.
As entertainment, lucid dreaming is better than ANY Hollywood movie. You could be part of the adventure, or a spectator, or both. You can fly, have superpowers, be a spy, fight aliens, etc, anything your imagination wishes to express. If you wake up immediately after the lucid dream, you may be able to remember it and write it down. Many people have drawn inspiration from their own subconscious by recalling a lucid dream.
As a last option, lucid dreaming may open your mind to spiritual revelation. You could start to dream the open yourself to the fate of the universe and let anything happen, knowing you can stop it if it becomes harmful, uncomfortable or even dangerous. I must admit to having the most amazing dreams in this manner.
Lucid dreaming requires practice however. The first step is to be able to fall asleep without too much effort. When you can calm your mind almost instantly and let yourself slip into sleep, you can then move to the next step. As you fall asleep, tell yourself that you want to have a lucid dream, you want control of your dreams, you want to live your dreams. As you fall asleep you will not fall quite so far asleep, but you will be able to dream and the chances of a lucid dream is higher. This take time and practice, you will not get it on the first try.
Now, just because you want a lucid dream will not guarantee that you will get one. Sometimes your mind just is not up for dreams, or at least significant dreams. Do not get discouraged. Keep trying.
The capper is remembering these dreams. There are two things I do to remember dreams. First I tell myself I want to remember my dreams as I fall asleep. This puts the idea into "my lucid self" to remember to remember the dream as it ends. Second, I keep a tape recorder next to the bed and as soon as I wake from the dream I tell the story as best I can. This does two things; first it cements the memory in a conscious state and second it give me mental clues to search my subconscious (consciously) and retrieve more details.
Lucid dreaming is fun... but you have to practice and not give up.
