Australia differs from other continents because just that - its a different country from other continents which have countries in them. Its different because of its location, people, politics, language, history, culture, society.
New Zealand is famous for
1 - First country in the world to give women the vote (1893)
2 - First person to split the atom was a new zealander - Sir Ernest Rutherford also Sir Edmund Hillary was the first person to climb Mt Everest.
3 - Our Native people Maori. British established control through the Treaty of Waitangi - NZ's founding document, still as important as when it was signed. While some countries native people are marginalised and lack voice, New Zealands attempt at becoming Bi-cultural is view as a bench mark for other native people. That's not to say we have corrected all past wrongs for Maori and the affects colonisation has caused.
4 - Lord of the Rings was filmed in New Zealand
5 - Scenery, It is one of the most beautifulest countries in the world.
6- We are a nuclear-free country
7 - Rugby
There are so many more, not bad for a country of only 4 mill!

You got a good reply from Claire K on New Zealand which is a great place even if they do have too many waterfalls on the South Island.
Australia is the flattest, driest and most geologically stable continent in the world. (There are very few waterfalls). We have some of the oldest exposed rocks in the world in n-w Western Australia, over 3500 million years old.
The continent is flat because it is geologically stable, meaning no mountain building and all the old mountain ranges have been worn down to hills. This also means we have some of the poorest soils in the settled world since most of the nutrients have been washed out to sea long ago. The last volcanic eruption in Australia seems to have been over 5000 years ago and that seems to have been little more than a few dying coughs.
The location across the Tropic of Capricorn and the presence of the Great Dividing Range which runs just inland of the east coast from Cape York Peninsula in the far north east right down almost to Melbourne in the south east means that the central part of Australia is very dry. To all intents and purposes two-thirds to three-quarters of the continent is uninhabitable. If the mountains had been in the west and higher much of Australia would resemble South America. However the natural condition of most of Australia is drought when it isn't flooded. At present where I live we have had below average rainfall five years out of the past six.

Well, they're both Asia-Pacific regions.
They're both at on end of the world.
Australia is famous for boomerangs, kangaroos, and their aborigines. Not to mention Hillsongs and Darlene Zech.
New Zealand is famous for kiwis (as mentioned above), sheep, cows, The Lord of the Rings and being a clean, green country.
