Someone mentioned raw; don't feed raw. For one, it's risky. You have no idea what is in that food or if it was processed safely (there could be bits of bone your dog could choke on, etc). Secondly, the "logic" behind it is terrible. Wolves and dogs like Chihuahuas, pugs, etc. are very different things. don't put your pet's health in danger like that. The best dry foods will have multiple named meat ingredients first up on the ingredient list. Some of the best brands I've found are Timberwolf, Innova Evo, and Artemis. I've also heard Orijen is great, though I haven't tried it yet. The new thing is that the less grains, the better. Timberwolf has an entirely grainless food, and I believe Orijen is that way too. Innova Evo has a higher protein content than most other foods, so it may be best to avoid feeding it to puppies and smaller dogs, but it is a good food. Avoid products that have any form of corn or soy in them. Avoid heavily grained foods, but I see you already know that :) My babies get Timberwolf, and I change their flavors around often; they've done very well on it! I also feed them organic cooked chicken, lamb, veal, turkey, or beef, combined with Dr. Harvey's Veg-to-Bowl, a great combo of veggies, on a regular basis. One of my rescues has done extremely well on that diet! Just to add on, there are a few decent soft foods out there too, in case you are ever in a bind and want to feed him/her something meaty in a hurry. Wellness and Nature Organics both make a canned food that is over 90% meat. Those are the only two I've tried though, as I use them to mix their probiotocs with when I haven't had time to cook for them. It can take a while to select a good food for your dog, and it takes a bit of trial and error. Some foods your dog won't like or won't react well to. I highly recommend a dog probiotic powder addition to any soft food you give them, because if you're doing a lot of changing-around in terms of dry foods, that will keep their bellies from getting upset! :)
