He may have a small pile that bleeds from time to time. This is caused by either constipation or the runs.
Another more serious cause could be Bowel Cancer. There could be bleeding in the bowel which clots and comes through as a blood clot. This could explain the jelly like consistency. Being fit in general does not mean a great deal as it can go on for a long time before other symptoms manifest themselves. Get to a doctor and get it checked as a matter of urgency as this condition can be stop if treated early.
The very best of luck to him and both of you.
As for the stupid people that think that looking at what your body passes is silly. We should all take note of these things at intervals to find early signs of all sorts of medical problems.

I know this sounds bad but this has happened to me a few months ago. It lasted only a couple of days than it went away and then came back a week later- for one day. It turned out to be gonorrhea and I don't have a clue how it happened. I was told it could of been transferred by someone touching my anus area with saliva on their hand. Don't wait like I did go to the Doctors office. I didn't think anything of it at the time. I just hoped it would go away.

I wouldn't worry about it, but I would keep watch if it came back. This is a sign that irritation of the rectum and anus is taking place. This irritation can be internal (constipation, fissure) or it can be external (someone putting something into it).
If the cause is internal, eat more fibre to avoid constipation.
If the cause is external, you can determine how to avoid irritation there.

If it's just a one-off occurrence it's probably nothing to worry about. Get him to keep an eye on things for the next couple of weeks though, and if it happens again - or if there's any change in bowel habit for no good reason - get him to see his GP as soon as possible.

Red blood in the stool is usually not a sign of trouble, while black blood might be. If he's really worried, a doctor's visit might be wise.

He should've put it in a baggy and went to the doctor. Who might say to eat more fiber so he won't tear his rectum straining....

I think leave it for a couple of days and see if it's still there. It might be diet, or it might be something else. If he's not experiencing any pain, see what happens.
