It seems to me that humans are in flux between two states: peace and desire. The common mistake is to think that you can fulfill desire through selfishness. By seeking to fulfill desire through fulfillment of instincts you only increase your ego or sense of self which is the root of desire. To obtain peace you must truly abandon yourself (remove your ego / sense of self) This is only possible by reliance on a higher being. When your security comes from a higher being you will be able to give of yourself therefore reducing ego which will produce the peace. However will it matter a million years from now if you where happy or at peace? Will human beings even still exsist. Happiness and peace are byproducts of selfless actions and goals. If you aren't aware of yourself, how can you worrie about being happy? Seek gods plans a million years from now they will matter.
Higher life forms are supporting. They are self sacrificing and selfless and in doing so enable life to exsist. They add to life, energy and existence. These life forms work for oneness. Higher life forms are in a state of peace. God is the ultimate selfless being, is at total peace, and sustains all life, giving power to those beings that are supporting.
Lower life forms are detracting. They are selfish and take from other beings therefore destroying life. These life forms work to maintain their sense of self. Therefore lower life forms are in a state of desire.

You're looking in the wrong places, especially relationships!! Try looking within yourself, not external sources. If this problem persists, consider therapy, but be very careful about finding the right therapist. The only externality that comes close to a way to happiness is a job or career. Having a fulfilling career significantly contributes to happiness. Also, believe it or not, physical exercise works wonders.

Happiness is something that may be difficult to find. I had also tried many things to keep me, and make me happy. I've tried to substitute one thing for another, to substituting someone with someone else and it never worked.
I then realized that I don't need anything like that to be happy. I had recently returned home after being away for about a year and a half. During the time that I was out, I noticed that I wasn't happy with myself. A lot of things had changed for me, like the fact that my kids were starting to grow a lot and I missed out on a fair bit of time with them. It was around the same time that I realized that I can't take things for granted, and I had realized that I had everytihng that I needed to keep me happy was right in front of me that whole time that I was looking for happiness.
So, take some time to yourself and do what you can to reflect on what you already have, and try not to concentrate on what you think you may need to make you happy.

Emotional pain and discomfort is something none of us can avoid—regardless of our age, social background and religious belief. Have you ever asked yourself where that empty place in your life came from? The answer is, it came from God—and He put it there so you wouldn't be satisfied with your life the way it is, but you would seek Him—and find Him.
God created you. You aren't here by accident or by chance; God put you here. More than that, He put something of Himself in you—what we call your soul or spirit. You aren't just a body and a mind; you also have a spiritual side to you—a soul or spirit God gave you. The Bible says that when God created the first man, He "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul" (Genesis 2:7, KJV).
Why did He do that? He did it for one reason: so you and I could know Him and have fellowship with Him forever. He wants to be our friend! But when we ignore Him or leave Him out of our lives, that empty place in our souls remains unfilled—and nothing else can fill it. We find ourselves restless and lost, without hope and alienated from God.
But it doesn't need to be this way! God loves you—and the proof is that He sent His only Son into the world to remove the barriers and bring us back to God. By a simple prayer of faith you can turn to Jesus Christ right now and ask Him to come into your life. When you do, His peace will fill your life.

why?
- it opens your eyes to the blissful beauty of the world around you, from the sun rising each day leaking pinky shades over the land from a swooping swallows diving in the breeze.
- simplifies your existence, it strips aware material desires, shows the importance of family, friends and good times.
- it answers all the questions, giving spiritual food for the soul. It brings peace within your heart
- it harks back to the old ways, it tunes your body to the rythm of nature, the seasons and the animals and tree's way fo life. It brings you closer to natural ways of life.
Think about this, why were our early ancestors never depressed?
they were close to nature, how its supposed to be, and their lives were uncomplicated.

The only way to be happy is with yourself. If you make your choices in life according to what you believe is important, even though everything falls to ruin, you can be happy knowing that you did it your way. If you allow another to make decisions for you and you fall to ruin, you will hold the regret that you didn't live you own life. Sadly, I've seen the latter in many people.

When you become happy then your happiness will attract happiness. So therefore when you reach the point to happiness it is not working cause you are not happy.

if you can find the answer to that question, you will find the answer to one of humankinds ultimate questions...
and yes people in every generation have tried all sorts of things & all sorts of philosophies to not only find true happiness but also to find the philosophies of happiness
the Apostle Paul of the Bible have written something about living contented to the people of Philippi and it goes something like this:
"...i know how to be abased and live humbly in impoverished circumstances, and I know also how to enjoy plenty and live in abundance. ...
I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want..."
and there might lie the secret in finding true happiness...
you must first learn to be content in any and every situation...
and you start at being content in the worst of times so when better times and even when the best of times come you will be able to enjoy it as well...
