Most of the peeps are correct. The term jarhead originated in WWII when cooking a meal the "helmet" was used as a cooking pot. Flipped upside down and pour jar rations into the pot to cook in. MI (Military Issue) equipment today still use the same metal helmets as they did in wars past, but some body in the engineering squadrons got smart and invented kevlar inserts and MRE's (meals ready to eat). Anyone want to trade some cornedbeef hash? Also, just FYI MRE's are an IED within itself. I shouldn't have to tell this to anyone of the 5 divisions whose had basic.

My friend is in the military, and he says that when Marines are first in basic, they are considered empty jars; and they want to fill their "jars" with marine information. Being a marine is not a job, its a life. It has nothing to do with hats or haircuts.

It first came out because of their cover (aka cap). Marines square it off so a while ago, like decades ago, some people made comments at that.
ok, now to the the leatherneck thing too while we're on the subject.... a long time ago, marines used to put a leather collar on their neck because that was around the times when people still used swords and bayonets.... etc.

Watch the movie 'Jarhead'. The main character explains it before he even goes to the sandbox.

It refers to their haircuts, which used to make them all look as if they had their heads stuffed into a jar & the top was shaved flat!
