Not only will you incur a poopload of fees, some cities can arrest you - it's a felony in some places.

My advice - call the town hall or whomever you wrote the checks to and own up to it ASAP. Explain it was an error on your part and apologize profusely. Offer to pay in full in cash or on a credit card right away. More often than not, it'll soften the blow.

Good luck!!!

Get those checks covered ASAP before they bounce. Bad checks, mistakenly or not, are a criminal offense. You'll get charges from your bank, from the city, and may wind up with court costs and other expenses. How much of a gambler are you? You can bet that they won't catch it or bet how long of a jail sentence you'll be given for passing bad checks. Your choice.

I don't know what state you're in, but in California, if you write a bad check to the government (city, state or federal) you're in deep sh*t. You can be arrested, jailed, or at he very least have to attend a stupid course on writing bad checks. Hope to gawd you aren't in California.
