Can one have a panic attack while sleeping? If so how do you know thats whats wrong?

I am a very paranoid person, and often worry there is somthing seriously wrong with me. Lately I have been waking up with a fast heart beat. It worries me very much and usually goes away once I calm down.

This has only been happening the past 3 nights.

I was recently put on Toprol but know that is supposed to slow the heart down. This started about a week after I started it though.

I had an EKG done the day I went on the Toprol and it said that everything was perfect. But becuase it's during sleeping hours it doesnt affect the EKG results right?

I know I should seek medical attention and I will if this does not go away, I was just wondering if maybe this has happened to anyone else.

It is possible to have a panic attack while sleeping, but I want to stress that you should have a stress test done and also more than an EKG. An EKG only shows if you are actually having a heart attack or arrhythmia at the time it is taken and also shows past heart damage. Depending on your age and other risk factors, you should seek medical attention for this.
Now as for your panic attacks..it has happened to me that I have woken up having an attack. Because I have panic/anxiety disorder,I know this is what is going on. I have been on meds for the past 2 years for this and the symptoms have subsided significantly.
I think why this happens in your sleep or rest times is because this is when your body is most relaxed and 'vulnerable' for an attack. It used to be common for me to have sensations of an attack while lying down resting. Again, the meds have helped so much and I don't have the paranoia that you spoke of either anymore. Of course I have also gone through extensive therapy along with the meds...it is something you can take control of if you want to. Good luck.

You did no longer say how some time past it replaced into which you stopped the Paxil...if it replaced into at the instant then this could be a area results of scuffling with the meds all rapidly. in spite of in case you weren't taking it for long and the dosage replaced into low. you need to continually taper off antidepressants. additionally ingesting alcohol formerly going to mattress could reason you to awaken having a panic attack. i've got wakened at cases having an entire blown panic attack. specifically circumstances getting away from mattress some thing to alter your recommendations will make it go away. solid luck!
