The first person you have to be loyal and true to is yourself. Living reality involves being really in touch with yourself, denying a basic truth to yourself is like detatching yourself from reality. If you are not true to yourself first you are living a lie which is extended to all those who are around you.

Do what you need to do for you, and then do what you can do for others. If you worry only about other peoples need and ignore your own then you will lose your identity, and then should you lose them you will be lost without anything of yourself.

This is one of my all time favorites.
To me, it means be yourself no matter what because at the end of the day, you have to answer to yourself. You have to live with the choices and decisions you make (like letting certain things/people get to you, or deciding to eat a snickers or a handful of candy corn).

It means that, do not play games with yourself. Don't justify and rationalize or sugar coat anything for the sake of the ego. Be painfully honest with yourself in all regards and then you will handle everything else more correctly.
