I always thought that asian girls are the least likely to be lefties. Of all asian girls, I think less than 5% are left-handed. Now about 15% of my friends who are asian girls are left-handed!

I think the probability of being left-handed is the same all over the world, it's just that a lot of asian countries don't allow the use of the left hand. Alot of children in these countries are retrained at a young age to be righties. This would make it look like most asians are righties. And when statistics are figured, the numbers of righties in these countries are more prominent. Being left-handed isn't so accepted in non-western countries.

There is a higher proportion of males that are left-handed than females. Combine that with Asians, in general, having the lowest proportion of left-handers by geography and culture, possibly because left-handedness was considered taboo until very recently. This is why you feel they are the least common group of people. In general 10-12% of the world's population is left-handed. We surveyed schools a few years ago and 15% of children in Australian schools are left-handed. So yes, the numbers of lefties in the world IS increasing!

I went to elementary school in China for a few years and the teachers forced us to write with our right hand. Only when I came back to the US, I realized that I'm not naturally right handed, so now I can use both.
