There is the girl at Uni i have liked for over 8 months, but i have stayed back because of a boyfriend. There is going to be a 4 month break where i wont see her.

i want to tell her i am interested incase anything happens between them in break.

If i say - "If you didn't have a boyfriend and i asked you out, would you have said yes? "

she is a semi friend, and we do get on very well.

how would you react if someone said that to you?

I would say yes tell her how you feel. Make sure though that you tell her you still want her as a friend even if she doesn't feel the way that you do. Then use the four month break to get over her so that when you do meet up again you will still be able to be friends.
I've been there before and I missed my opportunity. Then one night at a party in my semi-semi drunken state it slipped out to the guy I was friends with and he told me that if I'd told him at the time he would have left her for me as he had felt the same! Unfortunately he did break up with her and ended up with someone else instead of me because I didn't speak up.

I wouldn't recommend that approach. You can give her the hint that you are interested without coming right out and saying so, and then don't have to suffer the embarrassment in the event she is totally into the b/f and nothing happens during the "break". Just tell her that you enjoy her company and if she ever finds herself bored and wants to hang out, you would love to spend time with her. That's non-commital, but if something does happen during the "break" and she *is* attracted to you, she'll remember that "offer" and she'll call. Leave it at that.

I think that's a good way of putting it because it doesn't put her in an uncomfortable position. I would answer the question honestly and I wouldn't be at all offended by it. It lets her know you're interested, but you still respect the boundaries of the relationship.

It's not really a bad thing to say, but it is kind of putting her right on the spot. You don't want her staring blankly at you going 'Uuuuhhhh.'
Even if you two are going to be a way from eachother I'm sure you two would still talk (I hope)
Just give her small hints until the time is right...
Good luck :)

I'd be terribly flattered and keep it in the back of my mind, just in case the b/f thing didn't work out...

if i'm interested, i'll say yes. that's quite an old fashioned way to show her that you like her and i think it's pretty subtle.

good luck! :)
