Fellow Catholics?
If you are catholics, especaially Italian, Spanish, Mexican Catholic. What are those scarves(usually very ornate) that older Catholic women used to wear to cover their head to church called? I know my older relatives wore them (Mexican), and I've also seen older Italian women wear them. I'm sure other Catholic nationalities wore them too, I'm just not aware of them. Why did they wear them? why have they stopped? I think the scarves are lovely.

Mantillas! Thats it! My grandmother would wear one. They were beautiful, usually made of lace. I would really like to keep this tradition, if only to feel closer to my grandmother, but I would be the only one wearing one. So sad!

Mantillas. Head coverings were worn in churches by women because of tradition based on that passage in Paul's letter about women keeping their hair covered. With Vatican II, that requirement was abolished. Women can still wear hats and scarves but don't have to.

We called them veils -- they used to be long like scarves, then they got smaller over the years. The church required that the women wear veils to cover their heads and then in the late 70s, veils became optional.

Woman used them out of respect for entering the house of God. Our fellow catholics forget that Our Lord is present, body, soul and divinity in a catholic church. Its called the Eucharist. Saten is having his way even with some of our brothers and sisters out there. No more respect no more solemnity, no more genuflections and so on. Our Lady of Fatima.....pray for us!
