my shih tzu has fleas and it's affecting me as well. shampoo and ointments are so temporary and i dont want the maintenance of doing this every month. i was hoping for something more permanent where fleas are "bye bye, i don't need a postcard" type of deal. a flea collar is ideal, unfortunately my puppy mattes because of his fur coat and he also needs his coat for fall and winter. are there any other solutions? like, a flea collar especially for shih tzus? because, i am also being affected by this; i have a coloring book of connect-the-dots all over my legs and my back.

so sad.

are there any flea collars for shihtzus or solutions of getting rid of them forever?

Flea collars dont work, all they do is make the fleas go to the back end of the dog. The best way to eliminate them is to use a monthly preventative, like Advantage, that can be bought at your vet. They aren't gonna go away though unless you eliminate them from the enviroment, which means you'll have to flea bomb your house and vacuum frequently for 1-2 weeks.

Agreed. Fleas like to accomodate the hindquarters of dogs especially (right above the tail) where the blood supply is very ample. Flea collars DON'T work. The chemicals put in them is usually the basic one that simply interrupts the flea's reproductive cycle. Seeing how you have a major infestation already, I highly recommend Advantage. Saw results in 3 days + vacuuming.

Ditto with flea baths/shampoos. It kills off the adults, but what about the larvae? Remember, all you need is ONE flea, and you've got an infestation again!

What 'ointments' are you referring to? Have you tried Advantage/Sentinel/Revolution/Frontline, etc. If so, then I am very surprised - these things work most effectively becuz it targets the flea's life cycle in more than one stage (for example, flea collars and Program only affect mature fleas that are ready to reproduce. These products act like 'birth control' to them, but what are you gonna do about the unseen flea larvae lurking in your carpet and furniture, etc?) Advantage kills on contact at any stage of the flea's life, larvae or adult.

You only have to do it once a month, applying the lil tube of solution between the dog's shoulderblades. I think the time to do it, plus the price it costs (shop around; call up vets and see who will give you the cheapest price. You should get a boxful that's good for 6 months, I think) is well worth a flea-free home, and a happy (and bite-free!) you and shihtzu. You might get a lil icky wet spot after applying it at first, but after a couple days, it will have spread over your dog's skin. The natural movement of your dog is what helps spread the solution.

There are other products out there, but I have found Advantage to meet my needs (for example, Sentinel not only does the same as Advantage, but it also applies to ticks and certain worms...something like that).

Keep up with the vacuuming and washing. Hopefully, the fleas will find your dog a lot more inviting and hop on for a meal. Then the insecticide you've put on your dog can do its job and kill all the nasty lil buggers.

Honestly...dont buy flea collars...they are pretty much worthless. I've actually seen collars where fleas were hiding underneath the collar. Your best bet is to use Frontline. Its the best flea preventative out right now. Also do NOT use Hartz or anything you buy at Walmart....they say its suppose to work for at least 4 weeks..but they tend to wear out at about 1-2 weeks and can become toxic to your dog. Frontline you can get from your vet or order it through PetMeds. It is a little pricey but remember...you get what you pay for.

I have a Tzu also. I use Advantage and it works great. I apply it between her shoulders once a month. It comes with stickers you can put on your calendar to remind you when you did it last. Takes almost 1 minute to do it. Your dog will be so much happier. You will too. I also give her heart worm pill the same day. Dont you have to change a collar once a month? m
