Some people try to avoid the subject of immigration just in case they were told off as racist.
You will find racists and genuine debaters in here and you have to make the distinction between the two.

It's xenophobia and it runs both ways unfortunately.
This is the immigration thread though and it's become a very hot issue.
Alot of people are thinking "Mexican," when it comes to illegal immigration, including most Hispanics here! The terms aren't synonymous though. There are illegal immigrants from other nations and regions of the world, like 45,000 illegal Irish for instance, but their numbers pale in comparison and they blend in better, albeit with a brogue. If illegal immigrants were more spread out amongst all nationalities I think there would be more identification and sympathy with them- they would be more like the collective melting pot perhaps. And we wouldn't have this issue of language which seems to upset alot of people I hear on talk radio and Lou Dobbs. I went to high school in a very Mexican-American part of a Tx city. We had a couple of families of Vietnamese boat people settled in our area. The kids learned English incredibly fast and one girl told me during PE class that she and her brothers had to finish their homework and then teach their parents and grandparents English and math after dinner each night by their request.

But when you walk through your neighborhood and the billboards are in Spanish (i noticed one for Fashion Bug stores near my house today), not Spanish AND English; when your laid off friend is told he can't have a similar job at a local call center because he's not bilingual (he took German in HS); when people break the law and feel entitled to hold a big demonstration here, yet Americans demonstrating against some environmental injustice in Mexico get jailed, beaten and deported, then I think people tend to get a little frustrated.
I know I do, but it's basically jealousy because my English ancestors came here ages ago but the Irish side only in the last century, and they, like so many immigrants, completely gave up their heritage and culture, which I miss having very much.
We all need a tribe and I think there are alot of people who are realizing, when they see other immigrants refusing to assimilate, just how much we all lost by becoming so homogenized that we are now called "white" whether we are of Finnish, Irish, Slovakian, Icelandic, Afrikaans, Italian, etc heritage.
What's worse, those who call us "white," neither know nor care about our cultural differences, but we'd better recognize their's!

Grain of salt. I think everyone needs to look past perceived racism or hatred and see what the questioner is really asking. There is some blatant racism, but all people should be allowed to speak their mind! If you do not like it, just ignore it. How many true haters do you know in the real world? And securing the border and not wanting amnesty for illegal aliens is NOT RACISM.

Didya know that just about any ethnic/national background you can think of is already a part of the US population? Racism? Exqueeze me, fried chicken? LOL

Illegal immigration's the issue, here, people deciding to 'help themselves' to our country.

If I have to show ID to buy a bottle of beer, cash a check, all those other sorts of mundane daily transactions, you're saying people should be allowed to enter the United States without so much as 'good morning'?

Support the US Border Patrol! No double standards!

It is become a hot button issue, especially in an election year. This kind of demogoguery helps to get out the vote. Immigrants, whether legal or illegal have done more good than harm. If employers could not make a profit off them they wouldn't be here. It is a two way street.

In some areas of the country, people have to settle for poor health care, education, economy, jobs, etc. because of the overpopulation of illegal immigrants. This causes racism and hatred toward a people who do not plan on learning our language and customs. They want to bring Mexico here and therefore are unable to pass the exam necessary to gain citizenship. Illegals are illegal. They don't rightly belong here and they are putting a strain on our way of life. It's like how many illegal aliens can fit into a one bedroom apartment. They're like cockaroaches...)(

It is one thing to put up an opinion or question on immigration, but once they start putting generalizations about Mexicans and making rude comments about them, accusing someone of being Mexican as if it's a bad thing, because they don't agree with their Conservative views, is another thing. Then when they try to defend themselves for a racist comment, they start pointing their fingers as if they're the ones doing wrong by rightfully calling them racist.

immigration is very sensitive to Americans. some don't feel that we should take on all the worlds problems and poor. others believe that we should. this cause highly heated debates between the two groups. nothing is ever going to change it. democrats say no but vote yes republicans say no and they don't care what you think.
