Alpo is probably one of the worst things you can feed your dog. If you love your pet, go the extra mile and get a higher quality food. Your pet will be healthier and live longer, and you'll save money by less visits to the vet.
Also, puppies have different nutritional needs than adult dogs! Please please get your dog a good quality PUPPY food!
I agree with someone who posted previously that it sounds like there might possibly be blood in the stool. You should have that checked out by a vet.

If your puppy's stool is black and tarry, take him to a vet immediately. He may have a life-threatening illness, especially if he has any of these other symptoms: Diarrhea, Vomiting, Pale gums, Other areas of bleeding or bruising on the body, Weight loss, Poor appetite, Excessive drinking or urinating, Excessive urinating.
Black tarry stools are probably not being caused by the food, which I would not recommend, but by the presence of digested blood (Melena) in the feces. Melena develops when blood high in the intestinal track is digested and bleeds into the stomach or small intestines. Melena can be caused by a number of things, including but not limited to a foreign body in the stomach or intestines or gastrointestinal disease.
Regarding Alpo, get rid of it. It's junk dog food. Look for dog food that has chicken, beef or lamb as it's primary source of protein, not meat or chicken byproducts, and contains real ingredients such as brown rice, not fillers and sugar (i.e.,wheat middlings, rice bran, sucrose, etc.) Premium pet foods are expensive, but they are healthier for your puppy and you won't have to feed as much. California Natural, Food for the Puppy Lover's Soul, and Canidae are good examples.

No, puppies need more protein and fat than are in adult dog food. But the food may not be the only cause for the stool problems. If you havent already, have a fecal exam done by your vet.

Why the hell would you feed that to a puppy....or any dog for that matter?????????????? tarry black stools are a sign of BLOOD high in the intestional tract. See a vet or it's a dead pup you will have.

Black tarry feces is usually a sign of blood in the stool. Take the pup to the Vet and have them do a fecal flotation.
