Very weird situation here. We feed the dogs regularly but for some reason they like to eat dirt. There is one spot off the back porch that they regulary excavate. And it does not matter whether it is new dirt or old dirt, they keep eating it. Anybody know why?

Mineral deficient. Not to uncommon. Go to your vet and get some doggie vitamins. Same reason some dogs will eat rocks. Which is a more serious problem because the rocks can get lodged in their stomach or intestines and would have to be surgically removed. VERY COSTLY.

There could be many reasons.
Most likely they smell/taste something they like. Not that you would notice (sorry but your ablities to taste and smell aren't as great as your dogs, you will just have to live with that).
Some times it is a sign something is wrong, like an animal may have worms.
Some times they just saw someone or something due it once and can't stop doing it themselves out of habit.
Like I said, alot of reasons. I know dog owners get use to this so much they don't think about this,.. but it might not be healthy for your dogs to be doing this. This can lead to parasites,.. and may I remind you Parasites can be internal (infact that's more normal). This could lead to problems in the future,... especially health problems. My mom's friend's family is haveing a problem right now where they have had some sudden deaths in their family, the latest they finally decided to look into and found out was caused by a parasite they figure she had for a long time and suspect the rest of the family may have,.. of all things doing things to better her health killed her (the parasites didn't like it and... well,.. she ended up dieing from them reacting to it).

sometimes there are minerals that the dogs are lacking in their system so they compensate by eating dirt, cat poo and other remnants. its not harmfull, unless they eat a MASSIVE excess.. that will cause sand colic and they may need their stomach pumped. i say, keep watching..

Your dogs are lacking a nutrient/vitamin. Probably not getting it from their food. Try getting them a daily vitamin.

not sure why but i bet its the same reason as why they eat bark or grass if they still are eating and gaining weight properly i wouldnt worry cause it wont hurt them
