Why not stick with "Jock"...just change the spelling to j-o-c-k rather than j-a-q-u-e-s. That way you've got a name that the dog presumably knows, and you've got a Scottish name for him.

As a foster parent, I know that most dogs do tend to get renamed after they get adopted. According to some people who come back to the rescue to show off how the pup has grown, the puppy tends to be a bit confused for the first couple of days after the name change and doesn't really listen all to well till their new name catches on. The older the dog is, the harder it is to adjust to a new name. If the dog is 1 year or older, you should probably just keep calling him by the foster name, because that is what they have grown to respond to.

Here's a list of Scottish dog names. I suppose you could always rename him MacKenzi or Macleod and call him "Mach." He'll probably answer to that since it isn't all that far away from "Jock."

call him einstein since you say he's smart i mean its a logical name but if you dont like that you could always name him something like capernicus whatever you choose make sure you take the time to get the dog used to being called something else and good luck in your search for names i diliberate too long on these such things maybe you'll have better luck!!!!

If he cannot remember the dog's name, then it needs to be taken by someone else! Can you imagine having to learn to be called by another name at your age?
When i get a new pet,& we do not know it's origional name,we do our best to name the animal as much to the sound of a name as it responds to,as we can.We have had great success just casually saying names & watching for response.

Funny logic....
WHen renaming, try to keep it close sound alike name...Im sure the dog associates the one syllable, OCK type sound...so try to stay close to it....no need to change it too much, but not great for your friendship or dogs selfesteem:)
How about -Doc (that would be my name change) since he is smart,
or Lock, Jack, Hawk,Tack, Pock,Dock etc....
