I recommend you find something by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. The Sirens of Titan, Cat's Cradle, Slapstick, or Slaughterhouse 5, just to name a few.
You cannot go wrong with Vonnegut.

I just finished reading "The Memory Keeper's Daughter" by Kim Edwards and it is really good, it's a newer release too...another really good book although it's not fiction is Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts...it's being made into a movie by Johnny Depp and it is an awesome book and one of the best I've read in a while and another good one is "Little White Trip" by Peter Joseph Gallagher its a new book too he is just starting out and not very well known yet but it is a great book I read it in one day...you can go to these places to find order a copy www.thelittlewhitetrip.com or www.myspace.com/thelittlewhitetrip, if you order the book he'll sign it to you and everything...hope this helps :)

I've recently fallen in love with the books by Richard Bachman (who is Stephen King's alter ego), especially The Long Walk. It is a page-turner, and an excellent morality play.
