Labs and retrievers are generally good with kids, though it depends on how old your children are. I've found fox terriers and schnauzers (not minis) to be good as well. As with any dog though, they need to be supervised when around young kids.
If you've got young children, one idea (unless you particularly want a puppy and have the time and experience to train it properly) would be to adopt an adult dog, as young labs can be quite mad and a bit boisterous for little ones.

Depends on how old the children are and how many kids you have.
Beagle is a great little family dog. Lab is good too but they need a lot of exercise or they will chew up your house. Terriers are wonderful dogs but they can be crazy when they are young.
Working dogs love kids but they need a lot of exercise - walking - fetching - playing, etc.
I would stay away from small dogs as children can injure them without meaning to hurt them and then it becomes a tragedy.
Whatever you get please take the dog for a daily walk and do not expect the kids to take care of the dog. Please be sure the dog has its shots and good medical care - spay or neuter the dog. Please feed the dog good food quality food and give fresh water every day. Put flea treatment on the dog so your kids do not get Lyme disease or worse. A pet is like adopting a child. If you cannot treat a dog or cat like a child; then do not get one.
I have gotten some wonderful companions from the Humane Society.

A friendly breed, such as a terrier. They are good with kids, plus make great watch dogs.
Jack Russell Terrier is my favorite.

terriors r they best...they'r friendly n careful wid kids also r good watch dogs, easy to train too.

LABS LABS LABS. but any old lab mutt from pound with a good personality is good. If they wag tail when they see your kids, there it is.
