Yes, and it can be hard to notice. It's a feeling of overall lethargy - not motivated to do anything. Not caring about how you look, not wanting to go out with friends, just kind of a "whatever" attitude towards life.
Compare how you feel now to how you've felt during some of the best times of your life. Didn't you feel more energized, motivated, excited about the future?
St. John's Wort is a great herb you can take to help. It doesn't have any side effects and is relatively inexpensive.

There are different type of depression and different causes. Some can be a common sort of things that affect everyone at some time or other. Some forms can be caused by physical problems, or for women fluctuation in hormones. When you are physically ill you might feel down as well. Some medications have mild depression as a side effect. The first thing to do is to determine on a scale of 1-10 how bad do you feel. How often. Are there other symptoms going along with it, such as sleeping a lot, or not wanting to do any of the things that you use to enjoy. Did you mood change in response to some life event? And so on.
Basically depression can range from severe forms that are caused by physical problems in the brain and require medication to mild forms that are a natural result of responses to events in life. Treatment depends on the type. Could be meds, could be a cup of tea with a good friend, or something in between.

There are varying levels of depression. Everyone above has listed many of the symtoms. But the one thing not mentioned is length of time. Everyone gets depressed now and again - feeling low, feeling blue. That kind of thing. But if it lasts longer than a week or so, you are probably depressed and should look for help. Even mild depression, if gone untreated, can become worse. If you feel any number of the symtoms above and feel them for longer than a week or so, I would talk to your doctor because it is very possible you are suffering from depression.

Loss of sleep and/or appetite, withdrawal from friends and family, detached from reality, feelings of worthlessness, crying a bit....those are just mild to lowlevel which can escalate to severe if not treated or get helped on by counseling. Medication helps to alleviate it but doesn't get rid of it. Talking to a supportive person helps out a lot...:)

The symptoms for depression run parallel with a greet many mental illnesses. If you feel that your quality of life isn't what you feel it should be then you should see a doctor, probably your general care practitioner for suggestions on what to do.

If your depression is mild you or your friends won't know. My wife of 45 years was recovering from cancer and a stroke. The oncologist asked if she was depressed she said no, I said yes. He put her on prozac, now we are both happy.
