Yes, we do believe in the Old Testament. I am not sure what you think the Old Testament decribes God to be. I can tell you that we believe God once was a man and that He attained exaltation, the highest degree of glory in heaven, and then created this world and spirit children which were sent here to gain physical bodies and be tested. If we live righteously enough we can all have the oppurtunity to become god and goddesses and create our own worlds and spirit children.

Yes, Mormons believe in the Old Testament.
As for the second part, I can't answer that until you explain what your understanding of the Old Testament view of God is.

Many of the rest of the christians (mormons and cathlics are types of christians... even as much as some try to deny it) believe God could be incarnated in a human form (in jesus)
if you believe that, then its not that much of a reach to think that God was once a man that ascended or whatnot.
the real "trip" is to believe the god of Abraham could be "contained" in a human form while retaining godhood.
we are all as much God as jesus was,
I'm not saying that its a limitation on God, that he can't do that, but that the nature of God is such that doing such is definitionally contradictory.

The bible never contradicts itself. But man do tend to try to read the bible with a closed heart. Meaning with a mind set on his ways, or they just don't plain understand. What I do is read the verses twice sometimes more then that, but use a study bible to help you along the way. God does not lie and certainly will not try to confuse you. Oh yeah, Mormons believe in what they think the bible says. I stress the think. Trust me ask them about Jesus and hear what they have to say.
