Kinda sounds like he thinks a girlfriend is someone to control. But lets just say I'm getting the wrong vibe from your words. Go on a date with him. If he gets pushy with the affections, he doesn't want a relationship, he wants a good time. He's just got the definition of girlfriend mixed up with free prostitute.
It doesn't hurt to go out with someone if you like them to. Just be friends. Get to know each other. The titles can come later.
