My dog's skin is turning black and she is losing her hair. She also itches, and often scratches till she bleeds. What is the likely cause? What can we do about it?

It sounds as though she may have a thyroid problem. My friend's dog is part Golden Retriever and she suffered the same symptoms. She lost most of the hair on her back and tail, and where the hair fell out, her skin turned black. You should probably take her to the vet and have her given a thyroid test. It's also possible that she is allergic to plants or pollutants in the air. Try giving her Benedryl. It may help with the scratching. Make sure to get the kind that's just for allergies and doesn't have artificial colors in it.

Contact dermatitis - allergic reaction to something (and with Goldens take your pick as to the cause - I had one who had every allergy in the vet text book! That dog was allergic to summer. In 28 years of having the breed, only 1 didn't have some kind of allergies and get skin scunge - and all were well bred dogs from careful breeders.)

Nutritional problem. Some dogs need more of a nutrient than other dogs. Maybe more fat - fish oil or corn oil are good. Allergic dogs often have to have their diet changed.

A food that is excellent for dogs with hyper-sensitive skin is Solid Gold: http://www.solidgoldhealth.com/

It costs more but you fed less so it breaks even when compared to Iams. Also,, if it helps with the skin, you save on vet bills.

Dermatitis can turn septic with a staph infection. (The black is a very bad sign of severe problems.) You need to get her into the vet. (As my vet says,"Goldens were created so vets can earn a living.)

It sounds like a hot spot. Take her to a vet asap, besides aggravating they are quite painful and can get easily infected. My Golden gets them now and again.
