A guy with a laptop claiming to be from the census bureau out of the blue knocked on my apartment door one day and started asking me probing questions like where I work, how much money I make, whether I am living alone, what is my highest level of education, my date of birth, nationality, etc, etc. He had a photo ID hanging from his neck and had a business card which you can see on this link

His laptop had a Census Bureau sticker on it. I thought it was creepy. Don't they do the census every 10 years? Why are they doing it in 2006?

Call the Bureau and see if he works there. They do a NATIONAL complete census every 10 years (which is a mailing), but they do less robust ones all the time.

Those do sound like legitimate questions. Although the census is taken only every 10 years and the majority of it is done by mail in questionnaires. There are too many people in this country who don't turn in their answers and it takes longer than one year to compile that data. The Census Bureau does hire people to go around and ask the questions. I probably would not give them any information though, you can never be too careful.

As long as the person didn't try to actually enter your home, I wouldn't worry; those sound like standard census questions. Could be your town is paying for a special census to be taken. Our town is having one this year also because we have experienced phenomenal growth since the last census and an accurate count needs to be made for a town to qualify for more state and federal money. You could probably call city hall and find out whether or not this is being done.

the only census stuff I ever remember seeing was a form that we completed and mailed back. I don't recall anyone coming to the door. But you might call your village hall and ask if there's a special census going on. Tell them what you've told us -- if it's a scam, they'll get the postal service and the police involved for fraud and soliciting.

No dear...

They should start doing that towards the end of the decade. I just get everything in the mail, and then they get on my case because I take months to send it back
