I recently got put on an antibiotic, Clindamycin, for an infection on my leg. I've been on it for 5 days and have another 5 left. I take three 300mg capsules pills a day. I had a cross country race today and had unusually severe shortness of breath during and afterwards. Could this have been caused by the antibiotic?

Well all antibiotics have different side effects...most in which you wont experience. But all antiobiotics while they get rid of the bad bacteria in your body..Also wear you down. They kill off the bad bacteria as well as the good bacteria/flora in your body. This can make you feel sick/run down kind of pukey and sometimes can end up with mild diarreah type infliction. A good way to counter this is make sure you take it exactly the way you are told ( with/without food, times , dosage)
AND make you go take acidopholus. Acidopholus is the good bacteria in your intenstines that antibiotics kill along with the bad ones. You can buy Acidopholus in healthfood stores... But it also occurs naturally in plain yogurt.. so eating some of that will help too. This is VERY important to do (replacing your acidopholus in your body) so make sure you start doing this. When you take acidopholus make sure you take it at least 2 hours apart from your antibiotic dose (before or after) ... otherwise the antibiotic just sort of cancels out the effect of taking acidopholus

Clindamycin is a commonly used antibiotic to treat bacterial infections.
I am going to quote something that I found on drugs.com regarding the side effects of this medication.
"If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking clindamycin and seek emergency medical attention:
· an allergic reaction (swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; shortness of breath; closing of the throat; or hives);
· a rash;
· diarrhea;
· yellowing of the skin or eyes;
· abdominal pain; or
· little or no urine.
• Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take clindamycin and talk to your doctor if you experience
· nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite;
· heartburn; or
· an unpleasant or metallic taste in the mouth.
• Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome."

I would contact your doctor if you notice any further shortness of breath.

It should be working after 5 days. If not, ot time for a change in antibiotic. to a third generation penicillin or cephalosporin., or macrolide.
The reaction could potentially be serious. (not too likely but do not take chances). Your infection might be due to Staphylococcus aureus. And, less likely, may be methycillin and perhaps vancomycin resistant.
Get off to the e.r. if you are very uncomfortable or the infection is much worse. If not, see your physician tomorow. Insist on an appointment.

When my dog got antibiotics he got rashes and scratched to the point his fur was coming out because his skin was so irritated, ended up taking him back and they gave him some pills to keep him from scratching. Then the pill made him really thirsty and pee a lot.... Some animals will have reactions and some wont really. The itching is the only thing I've heard of, if your dog is scratching too much just take her back and they will give you the pill things to get her to stop then you can deal with her peeing all over. Health is a wonderful thing.

Clindamycin (rINN) is a lincosamide antibiotic used in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible microorganisms. Clindamycin is a semisynthetic antibiotic derived from lincomycin by 7(S)-chloro-substitution of the 7(R)-hydroxyl group of the lincomycin. Clindamycin is marketed under various trade names including Dalacin (Pfizer), Cleocin (Pfizer) and Evoclin (Connetics) - in a foam delivery system.

Common adverse drug reactions (ADRs) (≥1% of patients) associated with clindamycin therapy include: diarrhoea, pseudomembranous colitis, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain/cramps, rash, and/or itch. High intravenous doses may cause a metallic taste, and topical application may cause contact dermatitis (Rossi, 2006).

Pseudomembranous colitis is a potentially-lethal condition commonly associated with clindamycin and lincomycin therapy, but also occurs with other antibiotics. It may affect up to 2–10% of patients treated with clindamycin. Overgrowth of Clostridium difficile, which is inherently resistant to clindamycin, results in the production of a toxin that causes a range of adverse effects ranging from diarrhoea to colitis and toxic megacolon (Rossi, 2006).
Rarely (<0.1% of patients), clindamycin therapy has been associated with anaphylaxis, blood dyscrasias, polyarthritis, jaundice, raised liver enzymes and/or hepatotoxicity (Rossi, 2006).

SO THE YOUR COMPLINT OF SHORTNESS OF BREATH IS NOT DUE TO CLINDAMYCIN.
Do not take more than the dosage prescribed (I mean Number of days and strength of the capsules) If you continue to have the problem you should consult your Doctor.
If you continue to have this problem
