because the two are very different, the movie maker file has all the controls and separate clips to manage, whereas the video file is just the video. so all the controls etc have to be gotten rid of, and the video file has to be made to work with the WMP interface.

I'm no expert, just a user of the software. But I find when converting a file in Windows Movie Maker or MyDVD, it takes the program a while to convert to whatever format I need. Not only is it converting the format, but it's re-synching the sound with the video. I don't consider it unusual. The faster your memory and processor, the faster the process.

What is the condition of your hard drive? How much space, when have you ran a registry cleaner program? When did you last defrag your hard drive?
